Historic Sutton schools registers to go online
9:55am Saturday 12th October 2013 in News
Budding historians can soon research the names of Sutton schoolchildren from as far back as 1891 thanks to a new online register.
As part of a national consortium, Sutton Archives has linked up with digital publishers Brightsolid, which runs findmypast.co.uk, to digitise the admission registers from two borough schools up to 1914.
Users of the new service can check the names of around 2,500 school children at the time and also find information about their parents.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of the environment and neighbourhood committee, said: “This is a fascinating tool which can give people a real insight into our borough’s past.
"This information can help people get a good idea of where they are from and give some hints about the lives of their ancestors.”
The schools having their registers uploaded are Sutton New Town Infants (1908-1914) and Sutton New Town Boys (1891-1906 and 1906-1914).
