Bromley train masturbator victim speaks out
A WOMAN has described how she feared she would be sexually assaulted when a train pervert started touching himself.
And, speaking exclusively to News Shopper, she has voiced her dismay over the two-year community order Aaron Scanlan was given at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, saying it is not enough to "fix him".
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was the only person in the last carriage of an Orpington to London Victoria service until Scanlan got on at Petts Wood.
As he sat behind her on the train he began to masturbate, which she could see from the reflection in the window.
The Farnborough woman said: "I could see a shuffling in the glass on the carriage and I could see him doing ‘that’.
"I immediately felt uncomfortable and did not really know what to do.
"I did not know if he was going to grab me or take it further."
The woman feared Scanlan would follow her but managed to pluck up enough courage to walk past him and get off the train as the service reached Bickley station at around 6.30pm on June 3.
She phoned her mother and alerted station staff who called the British Transport Police (BTP).
The 25-year-old, of Mead Way, Hayes, was eventually caught thanks to a News Shopper appeal.
Investigating officer PC Alex O’Leary, from BTP, said: "It was thanks to News Shopper readers who called in with crucial information that we were able to identify and arrest the man responsible."
After his arrest on July 4, Scanlan pleaded guilty at Bromley Magistrates’ Court to a charge of outraging public decency and was sentenced last Friday (October 4).
His victim does not think the two-year community order is enough.
She said: "I think it should have been a harsher punishment than that.
"How is a community order going to fix him?"
