Mitcham Tesco agrees to not sell super strength booze
A Tesco store has agreed to not sell super strength ales, lagers or cider containing alcohol content above 5.5 per cent.
It comes after Merton Police made the recommendation to prevent crime, disorder and public nuisance in the area.
In June similar conditions were imposed for the new Sainsbury's stores in Grand Drive and Morden Road, at the request of the police licensing officer.
Councillor David Simpson CBE, chairman of the licensing committee, said: "This is a first for a Tesco in Merton and we hope the result will be less anti-social behaviour in the borough."
Councillor Edith Macauley, cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, said: "While Merton is one of the safest boroughs in London, anti-social behaviour remains a concern to residents.
"This decision by Tesco will help keep this type of behaviour down and I am pleased they have agreed to it."
