Electric car charging points run by Kingston Council were used just 59 times in a year.

The seven charging points cost £17,500 to install.

The most-used plug was in the Rose Theatre car park, with 27 “transactions”, while the three plugs in Blagdon Road car park were used only twice each between March 2012 and April 2013.

The council only holds records for the plugs based in car parks, not the ones on the side of roads because the contractor did not provide them.

It said in response to a freedom of information request: “We do not have any information for on street bays due to a failure of a third party supplier.

“This issue is beyond the control of the council and is currently being looked into by Transport for London.

“The council has not made any profit from the supply of electricity and does not generate any money from the charge points.”

Conservative party activist Ben Howlett said: “I would like to see the council promote environmentally friendly technologies and therefore the tax payer would get far better value for money.”

Earlier this year it was found that two-thirds of Source London charging points in the borough were used for less than a minute a day last winter.
