Warning over loan sharks operating in Harrow
People are being warned of loan sharks operating in Harrow using bullying tactics to force people to borrow money.
Harrow Borough Council is warning people about the not to turn to illegal lenders following reports from Citizens Advice Bureau.
The bureau has had a number of people come to them with bullying tactics including threatening texts and voicemails, and waiting outside schools of people they have lent money to.
Chief executive of Harrow Citizens Advice Bureau Jill Harrison said: “The reports of illegal money lending that are starting to come through to us are very concerning.
“Although they may be tempting to use, illegal lenders or pay day loan companies are not a solution to people’s problems because they are likely to cause even more problems further down the line.
“We find that in many cases after people speak to us, they in fact find that they do not need to borrow money and just needed advice on how to apply for benefits or manage their finances more effectively.”
The council say the practices among the borough’s Tamil community but say vulnerable families in need from all communities are being targeted.
From next week Harrow Citizens Advice Bureau will start running drop-in sessions at the Harrow Council Civic Centre.
