Is it too early to mention Halloween? The Malden and Coombe horticultural society have a pumpkin big enough for us all to carve.
Tom Wood, 34, from Ullswater Crescent, Kingston Vale, won the cup for ‘largest pumpkin’ for the fourth successive year at last Saturday’s autumn show.
He said: “It was very big, so I was fairly confident.”
The secret to his success? “Lots of attention, lots of good compost and feed it regularly with liquid feed.”
This Atlantic giant pumpkin is currently the biggest he has grown and measured 88 inches around its girth.
He was joined at the event by his father and runner-up, Barry Wood, who also grows fruit and vegetables.
The 65-year-old retired allotment owner said: “It was very successful.
“Around 100 people attended; exhibitors and members of the public.”
The Malden and Coombe horticultural society hold a spring, summer and autumn show each year.
The show, held at the Malden Centre, was free for the public and had various competitions and stalls, including arts and crafts, vegetables, flowers and fruits.
