Man found dead in Seven Sisters Country Park, Sussex, named as John Gilbert from Waddon
A Croydon pensioner found dead on a coastal path in Sussex has been named as John Gilbert.
The 76-year-old who lived in The Waldrons, Waddon, was found in Cuckmere Haven, Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford at 2.30am on Friday.
A 78-year-old woman who is known to Mr Gilbert and also from Croydon, was arrested and questioned on suspicion of murder.
She has since been released on bail until October 10.
Officers from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team are investigating the incident and are exploring the possibility Mr Gilbert died in a suicide pact that went wrong.
A post-mortem examination was inconclusive and officers are waiting for further test results for an exact cause of death.
Neighbours of Mr Gilbert said that he lived with an elderly woman and they were "inseparable".
One neighbour said: “He was a lovely person. It is shocking that he is dead, of course it is. You don’t expect it to happen with the people you live with.”
Another said: “They were very pleasant, I saw them coming in and out. The police came the other day. It is very sad.”
He added: “They were out most days and very active.”
Police were seen at the block of flats on Friday. Residents reported seeing forensic officers enter the property on Sunday.
Another neighbour, who had lived in the block for 15 years - said: "They were inseparable. They were always together. We saw them two weeks ago with their shopping, they were really happy. It is shocking to hear. Of course it is."
Another said: "We didn't see them apart. You feel bad as we didnt notice they had gone until the police came. They both seemed fine.
"The son had said he hadn't heard from them for two weeks apparently so he was worried."
