Vicar poses in Christ Church Epsom Common toilet twinned with loos in Sierra Leone
It is not often that a vicar is willing to be photographed in a toilet.
But Rev Rosemary Donovan was happy to pose in the loos at Christ Church Epsom Common in Christ Church Road on Sunday to highlight their twinning with toilets in Sierra Leone.
Toilet twinning raises money for charities Cord and Tearfund to make sure people have access to clean water and toilets.
The refurbished toilets were officially opened at the weekend after the congregation donated £180 to twin them to toilets in Sierra Leone where the church has a link through Christian mission organisation Mothers’ Union.
Mrs Donovan said clean water, toilets and raising awareness about hygiene prevented the spread of disease and reduced the number of deaths among children.
She said: "Every time you spend a penny remember how our pennies have also helped the rural communities of the Pujehun district to spend a penny."
Epsom’s mayor Councillor Colin Taylor said: "I think that’s a tremendous idea because if any partnership idea of the gospel is to be real it has to be down to earth. And what can be more down to earth."
