Time capsule buried before site is redeveloped in Walthamstow
A time capsule will be buried on Saturday to commemorate Forest YMCA's 44-year-old leisure facilities before they are redeveloped next year.
The Mayor of Waltham Forest, Nadeem Ali, will bury the time capsule containing photos and memorabilia from the leisure centre over the years at a celebration event at Forest YMCA, Forest Road, Walthamstow, between 10am and 4pm.
Residents are invited to attend the 1970s themed event in fancy dress and bring along any photos, ticket stubs or flyers they have from the leisure centre’s past.
Tim Pain, Forest YMCA Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our sports hall opened in 1970 and it will hold fond memories for many people.
“We felt that we couldn’t demolish it without commemorating its many years of service."
The exisiting faciltiies will be replaced by a new gym and function rooms to be finished next year.
There will also be a bungee run, goal shooter challenges, music, dancing, free massages, giveaways and opportunities to try activities like basketball, zumba and belly dancing on the day.
