Abbey Wood mothers traumatised after witnessing 'horrific' double beating
TWO mothers from Abbey Wood have been left traumatised after witnessing a “horrific” double beating on Friday evening.
Glass bottles, planks of wood and a claw hammer were reportedly used by a group of attackers to assault two men in their 30s thought to be brothers.
Blood stains and broken glass still litter the pavement around Edington Road where the fight is thought to have started and where police were called at 6.15pm to reports of a 32-year-old suffering from a stab wound.
It is then thought to have spilled over to nearby Eynsham Drive where a 34-year-old man had to be rushed to hospital after being attacked by the same group.
Grace Okhiai, 49, had just got out of her car after returning from work as a psychiatric nurse at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup, when she saw a group of up to seven youths in their late teens to early 20s attacking a black victim.
The mother-of-four ran inside her terraced house in Edington Road and told her 17-year-old son Lopez to stay inside before witnessing the beating from her bedroom window upstairs.
Leftover police tape at the scene near Edington Road.
She told News Shopper: “They just ran past me with sticks and rods and objects in their hands. They were running after some boys and then they were hitting them until they fell.
“It was when they ran off that I went to support one of the boys and put him in the recovery position.
“He was unconscious and he was bleeding from his mouth, from his nose and from his ear. His face was so swollen he couldn’t even move he was just lying on the floor.
“One of them who was also attacked said it was his brother. He was shouting ‘they have just killed my brother’ so I was reassuring him that help was on the way.
“I was telling him ‘no, don’t worry, he’s not dead’. This was so horrific and I have never experienced anything like it in my entire life.
“I was so scared. Later that night I couldn’t sleep because I was so traumatised.”
Catherine Idolo, 46, says she saw three white youths armed with weapons including a claw hammer chasing a black man outside her home in Eynsham Drive.
As she watched from her kitchen window, the mother-of-two said: “One of them in a white vest used his leg to kick the boy on the floor and then they started hitting him with the hammer and the wood.
One victim was attacked right outside this row of houses in Eynsham Drive.
“They hit him and then he fell down as if he was passed out. The one with the hammer was saying ‘is he alright?’ but the other one with the vest said ‘he’s sleeping, don’t worry’.
“Before I knew it I couldn’t take any more and had to pick up the phone and call the police. There was blood everywhere and they left him alone to die.
“Two boys who were passing saw him lying down there with his head face up and blood coming out of his head. They were trying to touch him and shake him to see if he was still alive.
“I hope I am safe here because I was shaking, actually shaking. I am beginning to have second thoughts about whether I am going to live in this area.”
Both men involved were taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening or life-changing injuries.
No one has been yet arrested and police enquiries continue.
