Haringey Borough Council has hailed its programme of summer activities for children and young people a success as students prepare to go back to school.

The council’s Summer Fun programme included activities from DJing, sports and circus skills to archery, cooking and skateboarding.

Staff members who helped run the activities report a high level of interest - with 91 young people attending Bruce Grove Youth Centre in just one day.

Over August, 65 young people visited The Junction, in Town Hall Approach Road, for advice on options and next steps after exam results.

Allison Shaw, 16, received her GCSE results this summer but failed to get the grades for her choice of sixth form.

She said: “I came to The Junction and staff were really helpful.

“They explained what I can to with the qualifications I have got and I have just been offered a place to do Health and Social Care at college – I’m really excited.”

Stuart Cox, Participation Manager at Jacksons Lane, said: “Thanks to Haringey we have been able to offer a great summer programme to over 40 young people, including 2 weeks of circus, dance, drama and art workshops.”

Dasha Pavelenko, a coach from Poland, helped on the multi sports programme through Muswell Hill Youth Centre.

He said: “I want to tell people in Poland about this lovely programme.

“The children have had such fun with the sports and games in the parks and the staff care about them all.

“When I am home I will tell the children I work with about my wonderful summer in Muswell Hill.”

Cllr Joe Goldberg, the cabinet member for youth, said he was pleased that so many children made the most of the programme and thanked all the providers for their support.
