Two women are celebrating their 100th birthday today.
Nelly Kent, of Bailey Close in Chingford and Rita Cox, of Nottingham Road in Leyton, were surrounded by friends and family at their respective birthday parties today.
Both lucky ladies had family travelling from all over the world to join the party.
Mrs Kent’s son and granddaughter are visiting from America and some of Mrs Cox’s family members flew in from the Bahamas and Canada.
Mother-of-two Mrs Kent was a successful foxtrot dancer in her day and won a bronze medal at a national ballroom dancing competition.
Her son, Freddy Kent, 75, came over from Atlanta to be with his mother on her special day, and said he was delighted his mum is keeping herself as active - as she always did.
“She used to do charity work and she was very active in the community.
"She still calls out the bingo twice a week now!”
Mrs Cox moved to the UK from Guyana 20 years ago and she now lives with son, Mike Cox, 68, in Leyton.
Mother-of-two Mrs Cox has seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs Cox has always been a keen seamstress and made costumes for the theatres in Guyana as well as curtains for a university out there.
After losing most of her sight, Mrs Cox has swapped a needle and thread for a deck of cards.
“She still beats us at cards,” said Mr Cox, who described his mother is “always cheerful and mentally very sharp".
