Ten fire engines needed to put out banqueting suite blaze in Walthamstow
A fire which ripped through a Walthamstow banqueting suite this morning has now been extinuguished.
Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters were needed to fight the blaze at The Pavillion, which specialises in Asian weddings, in Hoe Street.
The charred remains of stacked chairs was all that could be seen at the venue when the Guardian visited this morning.
Half of the first floor and most of the roof was alight when firefighters arrived at the scene at 1.15am.
Crews from Chingford, Woodford, Walthamstow, Stratford, Homerton, Leyton, Leytonstone and Tottenham fire stations all attended and fought the fire for hours before finally bringing it under control shortly after 4.45am.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and is now under investigation.
Police closed Hoe Street for several hours and evacuated around 20 people from the surrounding houses due to the amount of smoke generated by the fire.
All residents have now returned to their homes.
Station Manager Clive Robinson, who was at the scene, said: “The fire has severely damaged the two-storey banqueting hall.
"Firefighters have managed to stop the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings."
