Waltham Forest disabled parking scheme widely abused
Fake, stolen and registered in the name of the deceased, a crackdown on blue badge abuse has revealed a shocking level of fraud in the borough.
40 per cent of people with disabled parking allowance were found to be misusing it, it was announced last week.
A council crackdown that began in September has seen 111 badges seized, eight arrests, 29 vehicles clamped or removed and 31 prosecution cases currently going through the system.
Deputy Council Leader Clyde Loakes said: “Frankly, we have been taken aback by the number of people the blue badge team has caught.
We knew issues existed and that it was right to take a stand against people abusing the system, but the fact that so many people are quite willing to take advantage of something that I am sure most people would regard as morally reprehensible is surprising.”
Having brought in specialist parking contractors to investigate fraud in the borough, the blue badge team has acted on reports of suspected fraud as well as actively patrolling streets.
“It’s not just a heinous crime, it’s also a type of fraud that costs the taxpayer thousands of pounds annually,” Cllr Loakes added.
It is a criminal offence to use a fake, lost or stolen badge, or to use someone else’s badge.
Three people who pleaded guilty to parking charges in late July were ordered to pay costs totalling £1,543.
