THIS is the moment a motorist from Northfleet attacked a traffic warden in Bexley as he was issuing a parking ticket.

Oladayo Oladejo Olaofe, 28, of Mallow Close, admitted common assault following the incident outside Hurst Primary School when he appeared at Bexley Magistrates Court on July 25.

Karl Keen, a Bexley Council civic enforcement officer (CEO), was patrolling outside the school in Dorchester Avenue on June 17 when he came across a van parked illegally on the zig zag lines.

Whilst issuing a penalty charge notice, the officer was assaulted and the attack was recorded on the body camera that was being worn by the CEO.

Olaofe was fined £145 by the court and ordered to pay £50 in compensation to the officer, as well as £85 in costs and a victim surcharge of £20.

Speaking after the case, Bexley Council leader Councillor Teresa O'Neill said: "Bexley CEOs have only recently been issued with bodycams and this is the first case to have gone to court, where evidence from the bodycam has been used.

“Enforcing parking restrictions is a difficult job but our CEOs deserve the right to be able to carry out their work without being assaulted for doing so.”

She added: "This prosecution sends out a very clear message and this new technology will go a long way to helping CEOs feel safer in their work, as well as assuring members of the public that the handling of any incidents or disputes - including parking appeals - will be transparent."
