A petition has been started against proposals that could see squash courts removed from a Harrow leisure centre.

Members of Harrow Squash club have launched the petition over plans to knock through three of the eight courts at Harrow Leisure Centre in Christchurch Ave, to expand the gym.

Sport and Leisure Management (SLM), which was awarded the contract to run the centre by Harrow Borough Council, will be spending £1.7million on improving facilities at the centre.

Members fear the proposals will damage the club as they will be losing facilities at the centre which has been its home for more than a decade.

The club currently books a minimum of five courts, four times a week for its activities and says the plans will have an impact on casual players who use the centre.

They argue this will then have a knock-on effect on its activities as it will have to cut its capacity.

A spokesman from SLM told the Harrow Times that no plans had been set in stone yet and there were other options.

He added proposals were still in the consultation phase and the firm was in discussions with all users of the centre about its future.
