Concerns have been raised about plans for the borough’s largest leisure centre, with one club fearing its capacity will be cut dramatically.

Members of Harrow Squash club have raised concerns over plans to knock through three squash courts at Harrow Leisure Centre, Christchurch Ave, to expand the centre's gym.

The contract for running of the borough’s leisure facilities was recently awarded by Harrow Borough Council to Sport and Leisure Management.

As part of the deal £1.7million will be spent improving Harrow Leisure Centre which will include investment in new gym equipment, changing facilities and an improved reception area.

Tony Morrison, chairman of Harrow Squash Club said: “I think in the short term it will hurt the club a bit, and in the long term it think it will be devastating.

“The fact is we are a very well established club and we won’t be able to just use five courts. We have too much on.

“We use quite a few courts and that will mean members of the public who want to use them will not be able to.

“We might then have to cut back on the number of sessions we run, which would hurt the club.

“If money is being invested in the centre then it should utilise all the assets it has. We’ve got a strong club and it seems a waste to get rid of these courts.”

The club currently has more than 100 members and also 100 other registered players, as well as hosting tournaments.

A spokesman for Sport and Leisure management said: “We are currently in a consultation phase and no plans are set in stone at the moment.

“We have a number of options on the table at the moment which will utilise the centre as a whole for the benefit of the people of Harrow."

Under the contract agreed by Harrow Council, Sport and Leisure Management will also deliver services for Ealing and Brent borough councils.
