A generation of Jewish people who escaped the horrors of the Holocaust on the Kindertransport will be joining together for a 75th reunion.

The Jewish Free School, in The Mall, Kenton, will be hosting the Kindertransport anniversary on Sunday June 23 for some of the 400 surviving members.

Thousands of Jewish children were evacuated to Britain from Nazi-occupied parts of Europe, including Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia between 1938 and 1939 before the outbreak of war.

The day’s event will include guest speakers Maureen Lipman, who starred in The Pianist, and the former Foreign Secretary David Miliband, whose father was a refugee from Nazi oppression.

As part of the anniversary pupils from the school will perform a re-enactment of the House of Commons debate which preceded the creation of the Kinderstransport which will be followed by a performance from the school’s choir.

On the following day, Monday June 24, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will be hosting a lunchtime reception for the children of the Kindertransport at St James’s Palace.

Those who were saved by the Kindertransport were taken in by British families during the war and many chose to remain in the country.

The decision was taken by politicians in 1938 to take in thousands of German children before the onset of war to save them from Hitler's regime.

The event is being organised by The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR), based in Merrion Avenue, Stanmore.
