A new free school will open in Upper Edmonton after receiving backing from the Secretary of State for Education.

London Community Learning Trust plans to open the primary school in the Meridian Water site in September 2014.

The directors say it will be a school for people living in the area, serving families of all faiths and none.

The trust will hold a public consultation in the next few months about the new free school, including what it should be called and its admissions policy.

Reverend Nigel Asbridge, a vicar in the area who is also director of the trust, said: “This area needs another good school and will play a vital role in educating the hundreds of children expected to live in the £1.3 billion Meridian Water development for years to come.”

To help meet the current need for primary school places in the area, the trust has been working with St Matthew’s CE School in Ponders End and Enfield Council.

Together they have established an annex to the school in the church hall at St John’s Church in Dysons Road. The annex will be converted into the free school in a new building in Kimberley Park.

Stefan Roos, headteacher of St Matthew’s, said: “We’ve worked very hard at the annex to respond to the needs of local families and to get to know them.

"It is great that they will have the opportunity to grow into a brand new school with great facilities.”
