Two people have been charged after cocaine with a potential street value of £1 million was seized at Gatwick Airport.

The two from the West Midlands, British nationals Kris Millwood, 29, of Beacon View Road, West Bromwich, and Sherelle Burke, 22, of Bridge Street, Coseley, Bilston, were arrested by Border Force officers at the airport’s South Terminal.

The pair had just arrived on a flight from Jamaica at around noon last Thursday (May 16).

They were arrested and charged with attempting to import a Class A drug.

The drugs were discovered inside cakes in baggage.

A Border Force spokesman said the pair are suspected of attempting to smuggle an estimated ten kilos of cocaine into the country.

The spokesman said they were placed in Border Force custody and were due to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court.

Ingrid Smith of Border Force at Gatwick, said: “Seizures like this demonstrate how Border Force officers at Gatwick and across the country are at the forefront of the fight to keep illegal drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.”

She said: “Drug trafficking is a serious offence and those convicted face long prison sentences.”

Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to smuggling should call the Border Force hotline on 0800 59 5000.
