Coffee shop owners spotted their business on a television show after reading an article in the Enfield Independent.

Karen Mercer, who runs My Coffee Stop in Enfield Chase Station with partner Gunter Hollenstein, read about 24-year-old Care Thompson in last week’s paper, who won Hilary Devey’s Channel 4 show The Intern.

They recognised Miss Thompson after their shop was picked as a location during a day of top-secret filming in January.

Ms Mercer said: “We searched for it on the internet and we appeared in the first ten minutes, but it’s not an advert.

"If you’re one of our customers you would know as you can see our sparkly fairy lights in the background.

“We had a bag hanging up with our logo on it, but they blurred it”.

Miss Thompson, from Enfield Lock, appeared on the television show last week, where she won a six-month contract with Mills & Boon after proving her ability to handle tough challenges in the publishing industry.

Ms Mercer took to Twitter in January to inform her 4,800 followers about the film crew, but had to sign a form which meant she could not reveal details about the secret filming.

Refusing to spill the beans, she told us in January: “I can only say generic stuff, we have to leave it up to the production company.

“It’s nothing to do with us, we are just a location in the thing and that’s all I can say.

“I am not allowed to reveal any details. It’s one of those things – they want to be control of what is out there. It’s their story.”

The shop is becoming well-known on the television, with Karen filmed at the shop for a ten-second slot on ITV news in March about her views about the budget.

She has also hit the headlines after setting up Enfield's shock cash mob, where people surprise independent traders by flocking to their store with £10 notes.

The scheme, which started in October, aims to support shopkeepers with a cash boost in tough financial times.
