BROMLEY’S 800-year-old Charter Market is recruiting for young talent.

People aged between 17 and 25 are invited to apply for £10 stalls where they will be able to sell their products between May 17 and 24.

Artists, craft enthusiasts and fashionistas are particularly encouraged to apply for the historic market, which is held in Bromley High Street every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The initiative forms part of the Love Your Local Market scheme, which aims to help revitalize town centres. Six stalls are available for 12 successful applicants.

Portfolio holder for renewal and recreation Councillor Peter Morgan said the scheme is: “It is an excellent chance for would-be entrepreneurs and inspired individuals with fresh ideas and new products to get started in business”.

In 1205 King John granted a royal charter permitting the weekly market, and it has been running ever since.

This special document ruled that no other market was allowed to happen within around seven miles on the same day as the Charter Market - the distance was based on how far a shepherd could move his sheep in one day.
