John, Paul, George and Ringo used a zebra crossing in 1969 for the cover of their album.

So it seemed fitting parents, teachers and children who had campaigned for a right of way across Alexandra Road in Kingston should celebrate victory by recreating the Beatles’ famous Abbey Road artwork.

Kingston Council installed the crossing outside Alexandra Infants’ School after a campaign by families to make the busy road outside the school safer.

Fed-up parent Yannick Read, who works for an eco-travel company, even set up a “pop-up” crossing in June last year to draw attention to the problem.

He said: “I am delighted the council decided to put it in, but I am disappointed it needed us to resort to a stunt to get it done.”

Alexandra Infant School headteacher Rachel Carr said: “We feel it will help our children and families be much safer.

“It is great Mr Read got involved. We call it Read’s Crossing.”
