Whiteley Village has been chosen to hold the inaugural Weybridge Running Festival.

The festival on Saturday, June 1, is organised by sports management group All About Triathlons and will raise money to support the Cottage Appeal, an initiative set up in order to modernise the retirement village 500 elderly residents call home.

The village has been run on charitable donations since opening in 1907 and provides housing for single people and couples of limited means.

Runners can compete in a £12 5km race or a £17 10km race and are encouraged to seek sponsorship in support of their efforts.

Teams of four can enter for £25 and all are welcome, with prizes for best fancy dress and highest amount raised, among others.

Head of fundraising Richard Exworthy expected the event to be a success.

He said: “Whether you fancy a cross-country run or taking on an obstacle course, register today, it’s going to be a great event.”

Running enthusiasts can register at weybridgerunningfestival.co.uk and will have the chance to run through the picturesque conservation area and 200 acres of Surrey woodland that surround the 262 Grade II listed Almshouse cottages.
