A man who stole an iPad and charity collection box from Surbiton High School has been sentenced to four months in prison.

Thomas Heaphy, 41, from Dean’s Court, Chiswick, appeared at Lavender Hill Magistrates on March 21. He pleaded guilty to five charges of theft and burglary.

He broke into Surbiton High School and stole an iPad and collection box in February.

Councillor Patricia Bamford, lead member for children and young people, said: “All schools have to face the challenge of providing the right tools and equipment for the students in a good environment and things like this are not really helping that.”

“To steal an iPad, that is really not nice, is it? Because there will be student’s work stored on there that they will be penalised for if it’s lost.”

Heaphy went on to steal a handbag from Charing Cross Hospital weeks later, and was also charged with burglary at St Mary’s University in Twickenham.
