Street lighting scheme to save millions says Enfield Borough Council

Street lighting scheme to save millions says council Street lighting scheme to save millions says council

A new street lighting scheme being introduced in Enfield this year will save millions of pounds, according to the council.

The energy saving project is being run by Enfield Borough Council and will mean street lights across the borough will have a new energy management system installed.

It will mean lighting levels will be reduced slowly, therefore lowering the amount of electricity used.

The council has also said they will start putting streets lights on later in the evening and turning them off earlier in the mornings to make further savings.

It is hoped the system will save the authority up to £8million during the next 20 years through energy saving.

What with this and the benifit 'reforms' the crime rate is going to go through the roof.

Reducing the power would not be such an issue if so many of the street lights weren't positioned next to, or even amongst the branches of, trees. The result is that a lot of the lights' output is wasted as it is blocked from reaching the pavements.
However there is evidence from the US that reducing the light/dark difference (by NOT having very bright street lighting) can reduce crime. With low level light, eyes adjust and pedestrians can see into areas which were previously "dark" and where ne'er-do-wells could loiter.
