VIDEO: Gravesend schoolgirl Jade Phillips lucky to survive being hit by car and bus

Crash scene in Rochester Road, Gravesend Crash scene in Rochester Road, Gravesend

THIS shocking CCTV footage shows how a 12-year-old girl was lucky to survive being hit by a car then dragged under a bus in Gravesend.

The video captures Jade Phillips, who attends St John’s Catholic Comprehensive School, crossing the road towards a parade of shops when she was knocked into the path of the Arriva 480 bus during the busy school run.

Please note the video below shows the actual crash. You should not watch if you do not wish to see this. Some people may find the video distressing.

A schoolboy is seen dashing out of K’s Convenience Store, where the footage is shot, and desperately trying to find Jade who became wedged under the bus and dragged along Rochester Road for about five metres.

Emergency services were called to Rochester Road - between Empress Road and Old Road East - at 8.15am last Wednesday. (Mar 6)

Firefighters used air bags to release the young girl before she was rushed to King’s College Hospital in London with a fractured skull and broken collarbone.

Jade remains in hospital, where she is likely to stay for several weeks, and is conscious and talking but still in a serious condition.

Chris Sofroniou, 50, who owns Papa’s fish and chip shop, yards from where the crash happened, rushed out to try to help the stranded girl.

He told News Shopper: “When I came out I saw a girl wedged under the bus, next to the front wheels, plastered in blood.

“She was face down on the road. All you could see was the top of her buttocks.”

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: "In very busy areas like this, it is really important for everyone to be concentrating and to be patient.

"Pedestrians should take their time and find a safe place to cross the road.

"It is even more important for drivers to be aware that pedestrians, especially children, may well make mistakes and drivers need to anticipate that and in particular, watch their speed.”

Kent Police officers shut Rochester Road Milton Road and East Milton Road at the junction with Rochester Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call the serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Editor's comment

First and foremost, I want to wish Jade a full and speedy recovery.

I do understand stacks of people, not just family and friends, feel strongly about News Shopper’s coverage of this story.

I also realise that not everyone will agree, but I assure you we did think long and hard before publishing this story and video.

We understand it is shocking, but in the end we felt that if it might actually save another child’s life it had to be done.

Many people have expressed their concerns about this road and asked us to speak to local schools about safety.

We will now do all we can to campaign for better road safety in this area.

Stupid stupid girl.

Crossings are in place for this reason exactly. To cross safely!

I have little sympathy for her, only for the drivers of the bus and car and those who witnessed it.

however i am glad the girl is alive.

Far, far too harsh. If this serves as a warning to others to be careful on the roads then that's a very positive thing to come out of this. But, having 'little sympathy' is a very *hitty thing to say.
I personally wish her well and hope she's feeling better soon. I shall go and have a word with my kids about being even more careful on the roads.
Amazing video.

So its ok for a child to run out into the road?

Were her acts not stupid?

Even in the CCTV you can see her running into the road as the car came in to shot.

Like i said, im glad she is alive!

Sorry, but how dumb is this girl? She clearly runs straight into the path of an oncoming car which she must have been blind not have seen.

I feel sorry for the poor driver of the car who had no chance to avoid hitting her.

Thank god that this young girl will survive this terrible accident.
Thank goodness for this video also, as it clearly show that the car & bus drivers could not avoid what happened.
I would hope that this video is shown to as many school asemblies around the country as possible, as a warning to all. Also show them the photo which shows how close the light controlled crossing was to where it happened.
Get well soon young lady.

Very mature... just what poor Jade's family needs to read right now on how 'stupid' she is! Please tell me, are you really that perfect that you have never made a mistake in life. Jade is young, not stupid. She made a vital mistake that day that will live with her for the rest of her and her family's life - but stupid, NO! I think Newsshopper is an absolute disgrace in publishing this CCTV footage, does it NEED to be shown? Really? No more lesson in seeing rather than reading. Leave the poor family alone for Jade to build up her strength.

Sorry, but If you run across a busy road you should expect the worst. The kid obviously didn't look and while I'm not saying I'm glad she was run over, by age 12 you should know not looking is stupid.

While I hope she recovers, I can't sympathise with her as she just didn't look. You are responsible for crossing, not drivers and especially if you just run blindly into traffic then that is not their fault.

I'm glad the NS posted the CCTV footage of this foolish young lady, I hope it gets shown in every school in the land. Maybe it will save another kids life, it shows how one moment of stupidity and you can be gone forever in a second.

Glad she is still here and OK.

You don't have to be 12 to make silly mistakes actually. I often make them and I am an adult. The difference is that as an adult I am fully aware of what is an appropriate attitude to a situation. A child has had an accident, she has been seriously injured, but miraculously she has survived being hit by two fast moving vehicles. We as should be nothing but grateful that she will live to tell the tale. Kids will always run into roads, fall out of trees, play with matches and pick their noses. All we can do is hope and pray that they survive into adulthood where they will make even bigger and stupider mistakes. Not sure about the video being on here. Is it educational or is it just gore??

banjo8 says...
9:24pm Tue 12 Mar 13

We all make mistakes, every single one of us. We will all have made mistakes that could have had equally bad consequences as those suffered by Jade. We should combine in being thankful she is recovering and wish her well.
I do, however, agree that it is right to show this video. If just one schoolkid looks at it and it makes them think when they next cross the road then it could save a life - what better reason could there be for showing it?

there are a few of points i would like to address, my first comment is to wish jade a very speedy recovery, this is the most important of all!
1) regardless of how or why this has happened i cannot see a reason that any balanced adult would pass negative comments following a child's near death accident.
2) I believe by publishing Jades full name is overstepping her families privacy boundaries, if they want this kind of article then only they should be writing it. A criminal under the age of 18 would not have their name published due to being protected by our legal system, is this a matter for legal advice?
3) i would like to wish Amanda, Lee and the rest of their family all the best, and Jade... you just keep getting stronger! x x x

I do hope that the editor of the paper got written permission for not oly the child's name be used, but for the images in the above video to be shown. If not, then I actually think that is a disgrace this has been shown and published in this way, without the family being aware. I wish the child and her family all of the best, and a speedy recovery.

While I have all the sympathy for this poor young girl & her family she is very very silly for doing it. I also have a lot of sympathy for the drivers of the car and bus.

Stupid? No. She clearly knows road safety at 12 years old but how god **** daft of her to run infront of a car that's doing about 25 / 30mph whilst a bus is coming the other way! Was she expecting them to stop? Whilst its their road? They're crossings for people to CROSS the road.

I really really hope this is a lesson to every other child out there. She's is a very lucky girl!!

melissa67 says...
10:18pm Tue 12 Mar 13

No..... Lucky is winning at bingo! She is not lucky, she has been hit by a car and a bus! Clearly she did not see the car. She is a child, she made an error of judgement.

Smanf! says...
11:59pm Tue 12 Mar 13

Okay. She's not lucky. Not sure what else you could call getting hit by a car and bus and still surviving.

Clearly she needs to be escorted to school by a responsible adult. And the opticians maybe? For her not to see a car at 10 ft away.
I personally think she did see it and think she 'might' make it or they will slam on their breaks - just so a school girl can cross in the middle of a busy road at a busy time of the day.

You're contradicting yourself by saying she didn't see it. Then she made an error of judgment. Which is it?

Don't get me wrong I do really sympathise and I think your right by saying she made an error of judgement. So let this be a lesson to all the youngsters.

USE THE CROSSINGS.

Point 3 - thi is the most important point and I support it 100%.
Point 1 - I also agree, any right-minded person should only try and take the positives out of this.
Point 2 - i don't believe there is any suggestion this girl has committed a criminal act. But, anyway, there are circumstances where criminals under the age of 18 can have their names published. But surely, as well as Jade getting better, it's really important to spread the road safety message to all children.

Her error of judgement was 'possibly' running into the road without looking. I have no idea whether she did or did not see the car, I did not witness her accident, I assume you didn't either, so what either of us 'personally' think may of happened matters diddly squat. I think we can safely say though that she did not deliberately run into the path of the car, hence it was an accident. No need for cheap jibes about opticians, jokes are wasted when a child is involved I think. If this was your child, I dread to think of the bedside manner she would get.

Ignore the trolls - they just try to provoke reaction. I wonder what their reaction would be if their kid was killed or seriously injured crossing the road? Imagine if they heard a witness spouting nonsense about feeling no sympathy for the kid - only for the driver. I don't imagine that they'd take too kindly to it!

I don't see what the problem is, You can see in the footage, she has ran out in front of a car expecting it to stop. The crossing is a stone throw away and people expect everyone to have sympathy?

Im an adult, i use the crossings where they are. I do make mistakes and i do not expect sympathy for when i make them.

Im under no illusion that the drivers of the car and bus will be to blame!. Seems like everything else in this country, people are too quick to pass the buck and blame others.

The News Shopper is not the only site that this video is on, so are the people moaning about it going on the other sites as well? No didn't think you would.
The NS has not broken any laws by showing it or printing the girls name.

At Nine I was crossing roads on my own, and at 12 years old I knew better than to cross a road like that. A school mate of mine was knock over, it was his fault and after telling him he was stupid and then said I'm pleased you are ok. There's nothing wrong in that. You can not child proof the world and kids need to be told it straight.

Accountability and responsibility are two word that have been lost in this country for many years now.

I don't think anyone on here has said that the drivers of the car and bus are to blame. I agree with you and 'Wall' in terms of saying that people are accountable for their own mistakes. Obviously the girl is to blame for the accident. However, just in my opinion, it's a bit harsh to say you have no sympathy for her. It doesn't really matter what age one is, it is still possible to make a mistake on the road that costs one their life or seriously injures them. As I said before, I'm fairly sure that you would be insulted if your kid got killed because they ran out in the road, and you heard people basically saying that they deserved it because of their stupidity.

Firstly, i would like to send my best wishes to both Jade (for a speedy recovery) and to her family. Also, i too am a 15 year old boy and want everyone who reads this to be aware that i am not out to offend anyone.

Now i have a few comments on some of this stuff u guys have posted. Firstly, why is it wrong that this video was published? It shows exactly what happened. And if you have read around, there are rumors that she got pushed, it was the car's fault etc, so the video clears everything up and acts as proof of what happened. Next, i know i am not perfect, no one is, but i tell you one thing, i have never until this day ran across a busy main road, and even if god forbid i ever did, i wouldn't be expecting the car (coming at like 20mph fyi) to just suddenly stop for my pure stupidity. I am teenager, and when people go around saying "this is the things young people do", wtf?! there are still some mature people out there. And to jade's family, please don't get all angry at me or anything because i am only speaking the truth. Just because of her impatience to wait a few more mins, it has ruined her life forever, so was it really worth doing? Could she not walk a few more yards to the crossing, designed for humans to cross safely so terrible things like this wouldn't happen?

And anyone with complete different views, please feel free to express them. But i'm only saying what any mature person would say as its the truth. I am not saying i don't feel sympathy for her, but that she did it to herself.

And to all you people out there who think u can wing it and can be clever by crossing a busy road, don't because you don;t know what the consequences are. After all, jade was probably an innocent girl and probably didn't think this either. Anyways, this comment is going on too long now, so goodbye and jade, i hope you get better asap but next time, think of your life and others. xxx

So good to see you read ALL comments before commenting yourself. And dude, or dudette i don't care, but if someone on here wants to have a problem they don;t need to come and see you. Your only saying this because you know them, but 80% of the people on here are simply saying what the rest of flipping England is thinking. Yes, some comments are quite explicit and blatant, but your only feeling like this because you know her personally, and i guarantee you 100%, if this happened to a random teenager you didn't know, you would be posting all sorts a'ight? And how dare you say until we don't know them, we can't comment? Its a free country and we have every right to express our views on this terrible accident. And i agree, her family and her don't need this but who's telling them to read it? Plus, i don't know what time you went to school, but she didn't have any excuse to do this what you call "typical kid thing". I am in year 11 and let alone my parents telling me, my teachers always tell us of safety whilst crossing. And there is no doubting that Jade hasn't ever heard this because my brother is in St John's, and he says they don't shut up about it. Also, you should try standing outside a school for yourself in the morning once in a while and then hopefully you'll realise that we don't typically run infront of the road. And before trying to act all hyped on here, do read the comments because regardless of people's comments, they have still wished her well wishes to get better.

Think all you want, threaten me all you want, but i am sick and tired of people trying to ease the cause situation by using the fact that she is injured so badly. Not being rude, yeah thats fair enough, but she did it to herself. And "be careful, what does around comes around", what the ****?! PARENTS NOWADAYS TEACH THEIR KIDS HOW TO CROSS A BUSY ROAD, so stop threatening by indicating its bad "karma"!

Yes, I've seen on another site that the CCTV footage was from a local business and they haven't adjusted the time back..oh well, it will be right by the end of March! Besides, some other news sites are not allowing people to leave comments about this accident for legal reasons.

So if you knew that why try and stir it up on here?

As for the legal reasons well that's up to other sites is it not? It was on the daily fail site and they 100s of lawyers working for them.

There was no mention on NS that the footage was from a local business which was why I noticed it. I don't read the Mail only my mail!!

This is very true.

It makes perfect sense.. 9:08 - clocks haven't been put back so would be 8:08 - rounded to the nearest quater is 8:15.

I'm wondering how long before NS delete the comments?!

For your information, I haven't requested any comments on this site to be deleted at anytime...so I don't know why certain people are always finding faults with me!! If comments are being removed, it is most probably by the people offended and upset by what's being posted and shown on here. All I questioned was the CCTV footage time and the time as reported by NS as there was almost an hours difference and quite rightly so, because all business CCTV are required by law to keep their systems updated as part of the Data Protection Policy. The CCTV clock must therefore be accurate at all times as the footage from it may hold vital evidence for a number of different reasons.

As for disclosure of images from the CCTV system, it must also be controlled and consistent with the purpose for which the system was established. So if the system was established to help prevent and detect crime it would only be appropriate to disclose images to law enforcement where a crime needs to be investigated. It's not appropriate to disclose images of identifiable individuals to the media for entertainment purposes or place them on the internet. Images can be released to the media only for identification purposes; and this should not be done by anyone other than an officer of the law.

So by the shop owner giving copies of the footage to NS and NS publishing it without consent from Jade's family, they have both breached the Data Protection Policy. This family can sue for damages and more besides believe me! It isn't right that this video has been turned into some form of entertainment on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and in various other places. And as for some of the sick comments seen, please have some respect for this young girls family and friends, and most importantly, for the poor girl herself by not posting derogatory comments. Get well Jade! xx

Rubbish.

The Data Protection Act does not apply to individuals’ private or household purposes. So if you install a camera on your own home/property to protect it from burglary, the Act will not apply.

There are no legal restrictions on photography in a public place and no presumption of privacy for individuals in a public place.

No come on see it thought to the end and clearly you don't understand.

It is a public area. I can walk down the street and film anything I like in a public area so can you. It's a public road.

Don't confuse the ICO gudie lines with the Data Protection Act. No laws have been broken here.

You're confusing your own opinion with fact.....again.

The police often use footage from private cameras etc and often the time/date will be incorrect. My video camera is never set to the right time and date but no law states that it has to be. However, if I was filming in the street, what I captured would still be used.

Some interesting stuff here from some people who clearly understand the law, and others who clearly don't.
No law has been broken by the publication of this video, provided it was obtained from the person who held the copyright and the video was supplied willingly, the NS is within its rights. As is any other media outlet. The Sun, Mirror, Mail and even the BBC published this video - if anyone was going to sure then they'd go after these rather than NS as they could get more money.

She was stupid trying to cross when and where she did and that's that. I know for a fact my parents would have gone ballistic at me if I'd done that. When I came off a friends BMX and had my elbow sticking out of my skin, my dad just had a go at me and told me what an idiot I was! Eventually he took me to the hospital for stitches but I was in so much trouble that day!

banjo8 says...

Clareclc - well put, your comment shows a great deal of understanding. Just because a parent is cross when their child does something stupid or ill-advised doesn't mean they don't care about them. In fact, it often means they care more. They are cross precisely because they do care and don't want them to make the same mistake again. This is exactly why a caring parent might smack a small child who goes too close to the edge of a cliff. Unfortunately some of the reactions by some of the friends and family of Jade have not demonstrated the same maturity. Instead there has been blanket defence to the point where they've adopted a siege mentality. I think it displays a lack of intelligence. I don't agree with some things NS does, but in this case I think the paper was right.

If your elbow was sticking out if your skin, your dad should have been more concerned about getting you urgent medical treatment and once that was sorted giving you a lecture if he really felt you needed it. Or he could if given you a hug. Glad he's not my sons father!
