Woolwich Arsenal DLR: Rail worker punched in face after challenging fare dodger

Police appeal after rail worker punched repeatedly in the face from suspected fare dodger Police appeal after rail worker punched repeatedly in the face from suspected fare dodger

A RAIL worker was left with a fractured jaw after being repeatedly punched in the face by a suspected fare dodger.

The staff member at Woolwich Arsenal DLR challenged a man who nipped through the ticket barrier behind another passenger without using his own ticket on March 1.

The victim was then verbally abused, pushed and punched - suffering a hairline fracture to his jaw and a swollen lip.

British Transport Police (BTP) detectives are asking for the public’s help to trace a man who exited the station via the Woolwich New Road exit shortly after the attack around 2.45pm.

Detective Constable Steve Ajayi, the investigating officer in the case, said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and, at this stage, I am appealing for anyone who was at the station to come forward if you witnessed this incident.

"Rail staff should be able to go about their work without fear of being abused or attacked in this way, and we will continue to work with our industry colleagues to arrest offenders and bring them justice.”

Officers will be at Woolwich Arsenal DLR station on March 8 from 2pm to 3.30pm handing out appeal leaflets and speaking to members of the public.

Anyone with information should contact BTP on Freefone 0800 40 50 40 quoting B4 of 04/03/13. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

That check would take one hell of a long time.

What a disgusting thing to happen - I hope that the member of staff involved is ok.

I have frequently seen unchallenged fare evasion at that station.

Not difficult to understand why.

Its Woolwich Arsenal FFS, what do you expect good manners. Woolwich is like a third world country now.

Totally agree the place is full of scum bags!

I think all transport workers especially ticket inspectors should be trained by the Police and have the same powers of arrest etc... i've often seen people get stopped and they simply just jump off at the next stop without giving any details

Totally agree the place has a lot of scumbags and most of the new inhabitants wouldnt know what manners were. I have to travel on trains and buses with them every day but it doesnt mean the person who did this was even from Woolwich. Its a train station so basically that person could have been arriving at Woolwich from somewhere else or leaving Woolwich to go to where they live.

Woolwich isn't great, that's true. But there are an awful lot of places just as bad - Orpington, Biggin Hill, Grove Park, just to name three.

Orpington, Biggin Hill, Grove Park are all miles better than Woolwich.

There's good and bad in them all. I can assure you the bad bits of Orpington are every bit as appalling at the worst Woolwich has to offer.
