POLICE officers in Bexley arrested 12 people on Wednesday as part of capital-wide Operation Big Wing.

Arrests across the borough included people suspected of common assault, fraud, domestic violence, theft, immigration and possession of drugs.

One arrest saw £3,000 cash, a Mercedes vehicle and drugs seized by officers.

Ten drivers were also slapped with fixed penalty notices for driving offences.

Crime prevention stalls were held at six prominent locations, including at supermarkets in Welling, Sidcup and Erith and 1,000 crime prevention leaflets were handed out.

Chief Superintendent Simon Letchford, said: “Gang violence, drugs, and knife crime are serious, high harm crimes that can sadly have a devastating and lasting effect on local communities.

“However, there are also many other issues which might be seen as ‘lower level’ offences, such as anti-social behaviour or uninsured drivers, that we know can and do blight the daily lives of too many people.

"Today’s operation is about showing Londoners we have listened to their concerns and we are committed to taking robust preventative and disruptive action to stop this criminal activity and make their communities safer.

“It’s also about warning those intent on breaking the law and engaging in criminal activity that we will be doing everything we can to stop them, and wherever possible we will be putting them before the court.”

A total of 151 police officers and volunteers helped with the operation across Bexley, which also saw all pawn brokers and cab companies visited to ensure they were complying with the law.

Across London, 600 people were arrested during the one-day operation.
