Children at a playgroup in Mortlake released balloons in the hope of raising £10,000 to improve the nursery’s garden.

Parents joined the children at the New Stepping Stones playgroup on February 12 and released 40 purple balloons for the Tulip Appeal – a fundraising initiative to give the nursery’s garden a makeover.

The nursery has a host of fundraising activities over the year, including a sponsored cycle and a teddy bear’s picnic, to reach their £10,000 target.

Each child had a numbered balloon for a donation and the owner of the balloon that travels the furthest will receive a prize.

Manager of the playgroup Liz Crouch said: “It was quite a windy day so all of the balloons took off really well and each child had their own turn to release their balloon.”

She said plans for the garden had not been finalised but the nursery hoped to grow vegetables and build a willow hut where the children can explore and play.
