One-month-old Bromley baby has finger torn off by fox

A ONE-MONTH-OLD baby boy had his finger torn off by a fox in Bromley.

The animal tore the infant's finger off after dragging him from his cot after entering his bedroom, according to reports.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 4.38pm on Wednesday by staff at St Thomas's Hospital to reports a baby boy who had been admitted to hospital after being attacked by a fox.

"Police attended to find a four-week-old baby with a hand injury.

"The baby was admitted to hospital after the attack at its home address.

"Inquiries continue."

The child's mother was alerted by his screaming and rushed into his room to see his hand lodged "halfway down the animal's throat", the Mail on Sunday said.

Surgeons were able to reattach the baby's finger and he was said to be recovering well.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said the only reason a fox would attack is due to fear.

She added: "It's extremely unusual for foxes to attack young children or anyone.

It's not typical fox behaviour at all - foxes will come closer to a house if there are food sources.

Then they can become quite bold, but they usually do back off and run away when there's people around."

London Mayor Boris Johnson said more must be done to tackle the growing problem of urban foxes.

He told BBC News: "They may appear cuddly and romantic but foxes are also a pest and a menace, particularly in our cities.

"This must serve as a wake-up call to London's borough leaders, who are responsible for pest control."

Mr Johnson also said his thoughts were "with the baby boy and his family".

Urban foxes never used to be a problem. Now they are because of the amount of food available to them from fast food chains and well-meaning but misguided people who feed them! When people feed foxes, their territory is reduced, allowing more foxes to move in, and they lose their fear of people. They are not pets, they are wild animals, and should be respected as such. I like foxes, and because of this I WILL NEVER FEED THEM!

I agree, how did the fox get into the house. If I had a 1 month old, I would make sure the house is secure. As a former Bromley resident (will move back there in 5 months), I know fox numbers have increased, but I know many people who feed and encourage them. Like any species their population will grow and become more adventuruous if fed. When this happens, they start more predation and scavenging. Lucky baby was not killed. People need to be more socially responsible.

I heard that the Mother tried to get the fox off the baby by dragging/kicking it, surely she must have received some injuries too...and so "inquiries continue"? Something doesn't seem to add up...! I expect they'll be carrying out DNA testing to find out if it was a fox or other canine relative?

Poor baby - but it must have been a large fox to climb into the cot, drag the baby up over the sides then along the floor

Lucky the baby didn't suffer more injuries as it fell over the sides (most cot sides are about a metre high)

And wonder why they went all the way to St Thomas' as surely they could have got to the PRU much quicker?

In a report on BBC it quotes a London Ambulance spokesman, so maybe she called 999 & was taken to St Thomases

But it does seem a long way

And if this happened last week why has it only just been reported

The daily wail has now published pictures of the house (although they still maintain its in Bromley, Kent)

Doesn't look much wrong with the back door. If it was the catch or lock broken then they could easily have put something to keep it shut

The story keeps developing, now on Sky

"She was fighting with it, trying to pull it away from the baby. She said it lasted a couple of minutes and she had to wrestle the fox off the baby."

Wrestle? In previous accounts she kicked it. If she wrestled with it then as in other comments she must have been injured so as well as trying to eat a baby it has attacked an adult

And if neighbours heard screaming why did none go to help?

Sounds like screams often came from the house.

Sky News home deskIt's not nit picking - reports say Bromley. To me that means Bromley town or Borough

Even if an address has a BR postcode that does not make it Bromley - BR5 is Orpington but BR7 is Swanley, Kent and in Sevenoaks council area

If this lady lives in Downham or Bellingham or Grove Park the Cllr Smith is quite right in asking for accuracy

Actually a very good point, the fox had bitten off the finger and was trying to eat the rest of the baby when the mother wrestled / kicked / fought it off

If it took that long then it was lucky that the doctors could sew it back on - must have been a really clean cut

And very lucky the fox didn't chew & swallow it

Who cares where it happened, it doesn't matter.
Fact is, foxes are dangerous vermin which need controlling. Hunting should never have been banned and foxes in towns should be poisoned or shot to keep there scabby numbers under control. But, the people who feed them are the ones really to blame.

Wake up, these are dangerous animals that can kill. They kill for fun. Hunting isn't practical in built-up areas. You must trap and kill them. They shouldn't be in urban areas and people shouldn't feed them titbits to encorage them!!!

none atributed to foxes,!

people do not feed them, it the Cafes, Burger Joints , Kebab house that place their refuse in alleys and overfilled waste containers.

This "attack" took place in a private residence???

Take away their food they will disapear as if by magic

Trap them, then let them free 10 miles away they will only come back, or infest
another area, you must either cull them
or cut off their food supply,OR ITRODUCE WOLVES to keep the fox population down

If you've been watching TV various people have said culling (either by trapping or shooting) wouldn't work as more would move on and poison could kill domestic pets

The best way is to remove the food sources so they leave the area

The house looks pretty secure from the pictures I've seen and there appears to be suggestions the family had a dog. I am a great dog fan (and former owner) but I do know that dogs (and cats) can get jealous when there is a new baby ....

Each time theres a report the facts change, so either the newspapers & TV are reporting it wrong (something the parents need to complain about) or they are quoting different stories

She wrestled the fox / she kicked the fox

Door was open / door was broken (not in photos)

Finger was bitten off / arm down foxes throat - if finger was bitten off how did she get it out of the foxes throat?

Well I read this which differs..; Khadine Peters, 36, who lives next door, said: "I wasn't there at the time, I was walking home down the street when I saw the ambulance outside the house.

"I spoke to the mum and she told me a fox had attacked her baby.

“It was really bad, I'm so scared now - I definitely won't leave my back door open again.

I've not lost any bottle and I'm not the only one who's thinking the same thing..but you have to agree something isn't quite straightforward in this that's why the Authorities are continuing with their investigations!

Cllr Smith, now that you've established this took place in Lewisham and not Bromley perhaps you could get back to fixing Orpington High Street.

This farce has been running for nearly 2 years and will go on even longer if you get sidetracked onto foxes.

I heard it was an East European immigrant Islamic paedophile fox, come over stealing our foxes jobs.

The threat to the urban child from domesticated dogs outweigh the threat from foxes massively. If every single dog atack on a child (or adult) was given this much coverage we'd need a bigger internet.

Who leaves door open long enough in February that a fox can wander and start to eat a child!?

A foxes usual MO is to go through bins, scraps of food as well as invertebrates and small mammals, amphibians, , grasses, berries, fruit, fish, birds, eggs, beetles, insects and all other kinds of small animals etc?

So surely it'd go through the kitchen looking for food rather than upstairs to attack a baby kicking and screaming?

There is definitely more to this story imo. Just doesn't ring true.

Touched a nerve there.

1) I wasn't telling you how to spend your weekend. I was pointing out your strange choice of priorities. You are telling us that making sure fox stories are attributed to the correct borough are more important than correcting the High Street you wrecked nearly two years ago?

2) Do you really think Bromley's reputation is enchanced by the mess you have made with Orpington High Street? Do you think it's a showcase for how well Bromley manage town systems?

3) Why do you need to know my name before you can answer? Wasn't it you who used to bleat on here about "play the ball not the man"?

I will be writing formally to Bromley Council and looking forward to see what excuses they can come up with to explain the appalling design that has doubled congestion, how they failed to manage it and allow such a poor quality finish, why they have now replaced part of it with tarmac, and when they will be repairing the other 95%.

Its a complete fiasco. I know it, you know it, News Shopper knows it, but hey - the fox was in Lewisham so everything's OK.
