Three injured people were trapped when a number of cars collided early this morning.

The pile-up injured six people at about 4.30am in Leatherhead Road, Chessington, near the Monkey Puzzle Beefeater Grill.

Two Epsom fire engines and three London fire engines were called to the scene.

A man, 28, with back pain and an ankle injury was taken to Kingston Hospital and three patients were taken as a priority to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said staff treated a woman, 22, with back pain, a man, 35, with leg and chest injuries and a woman with a serious leg injury.

A air ambulance control car, four ambulance crews, two duty mangers, a medical team in a car and a hazardous area response team rushed to the scene after being called at 4.35am.

Firefighter Jane Northeast said: "Three people were trapped so firefighters extricated and removed them.

"We were back here at half past six but I imagine it was still going on after we left.

"Police have got to investigate and see what happened."
