Re-emerging from their 1980s fame, punk band Peter and the Test Tube Babies are debuting on the Kingston scene.

Formed in Peter Bywaters’s dad’s garage in 1978, the band became a staple of the punk era, appearing on compilations such as Vaultage 78, and Oi! The Album.

Front man Bywaters says: “We will be playing our loud infectious punk rock, packed full of classics such as Banned from the Pubs, and maybe even a few surprise covers.”

The band features the vocals of Bywaters, Del Strangefish on guitar, Paul “H” Henrickson on bass, and Dave O’Brien on drums. Bywaters says: “We have never been to Kingston before. A lot of people have told me that the Peel is the place to play and I am looking forward to that.”

Having released their debut vinyl after appearing on a John Peel Radio One session, their album, Mating Sounds of South American Frogs, topped the UK indie charts.

Their whimsical lyrics and song names singled them out among the punk crowd.

Bywaters says: “We are writing some new songs, a new album and hopefully we will get that released before the end of the year.”

They have toured around the world, and recently got back from a weekend playing in Scotland.

Bywaters says: “When we started, we probably only knew about three or four chords and naturally you just get better as musicians.

“Because we have travelled around the world we have picked up lots of influences as well.”

The band released a compilation of covers this year.

Bywaters says: “We just write about whatever we see going on around us and whatever happens to us.”
