Protesters plan to march to Chase Farm Hospital tomorrow to fight proposed closures.

Campaigners are due to meet at the war memorial in Chase Green at 1pm before marching through Enfield Town to the hospital in The Ridgeway at 2pm.

The protest, organised by the North East London Council of Action, is to oppose the closure of the accident and emergency department as well as the maternity department.

Campaign group secretary Bill Rogers believes the protest could draw a large crowd and he is prepared for an extended fight against the hospital changes.

Mr Rogers said: “It would be a disaster and I mean that in a literal sense. People would die as a direct result of it.

“We are for fighting and local people in Enfield are as well.”

It was announced earlier this month that a total of £115million will be invested in Chase Farm Hospital, North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton and Barnet Hospital.

North Middlesex will receive £80million from HM Treasury to refurbish the 1970s tower block in the hospital and to build a new women and children’s centre.

Nearly £35million has been agreed by NHS London to expand A&E and maternity services at Barnet Hospital and create an urgent care centre and assessment units for children and older people at Chase Farm Hospital.
