Disgraceful politically motivated Tory attack upon the poor,sick & disabled.

For the first time since 1931 a Govt is taking food out of the mouths of children & damaging their life chances. These extreme right wing proposals that declare war on the most vulnerable will lead to evictions,ill health & damaged lives. Well Done Broken Britain,& Broken Bromley

What happened to their cost cutting proposals to cut the number of Cllrs to 40 down from 60.

I tend to agree about Cllrs, they too get their nose in the trough and we don't seem to be able to prise them out. Other than voting of course.

That’s not actually true now is it.

The average councillor is not salaried, but receives an allowance on average of £10,000 per annum which is £192 a week.

Considering a single, unemployed person can claim up to £350.. It's really quite reasonable.

Just read this......What annoys me is that the £500 they quote is NOT cash in hand, as people seem to think...you only get what's left (after they 'take off' your council tax, income tax Nationl Insurance, etc) so your cash in hand is a minimal amount of this quoted figure, which looks as if you are living the life of Riley on benefits...as I am sure you know. I remember having a row with the woman in the DHS, who told me I was getting about £600 a month- with three children at home - I told her I wasn't interested in that sum, what made the difference to me was the money i was able to use.....Terrible, the way they manipulate the public mind in this.....

About time! The sooner it's rolled out across the country the better.

May I suggest that any unemployed person who feels they are not given enough free money in this country, kindly relocate to a place where they give you more?

LOL thanks for the sensible feedback - as it happens I did get work, but that stopped when the company closed. I tried being self-employed, retraining, and online applications, but they all came to nothing. In terms of children, I had been married but left because of domestic abuse when pregnant with my fourth... Well it happened to be the DHSS when I was dealing with it....have a nice day...

Take a look into the shoping baskets of these people: typically they'll have cider, gin/vodka, fags, doughnuts and a few pices of deep frozen food. This shows that they should receive less, not more in cash. Instead of cash, they should get coupons or a payment card that could only be used for nutritious food.

Makes me sick!!!!
I work full time, and take home £1800 on average a month, simple maths £450 a week.
People wingding that benefits are not cash in hand, goes on rent ect.
Guess what my hard earned wage isn't cash in hand to spend either, I still have to pay rent, council tax, insurance. Wages paid into bank and quickly taken out again!
The only unsustainable thing is the amount of Benefits being paid out, these payments should be to allow those that need it, to live a reasonable standard if living not a lavish one!
More money gets paid out on the welfare state than is taken in by income tax, I know that there are cases that some NEED the benefits, most WANT the benefits, the system is flawed just like the morales of those that take the hand out, that could quite easily work and earn there money!

this country could cut benefits all they like but it wont make a great deal of difference as there are people who have bled the country dry using ID theft on a massive scale.

And If u keep cutting benefits & entitlements(having paid in National Insurance) more people will die(over 70 people a day who have been assessed fit for work by ATOS)

Dont even try to defend benefits, bring on the cuts i say because all the people that have actually contributed to it arent entitled to it anyway.

When my business failed i wasnt entitled to anything because i own a property and had equity,I was told to sell my home so i had some money !.

I work all my life,employ people (employment may be a strange word for those on benefits so i understand if you havent heard of it !) and then i get no help when i need it.
For others its a career option !

How about benefits are only payable to those that have contributed to it in the first place, Lets say 5 years ?
That would stop the immigrants and hoodrats from seeing it as a way of life for starters.

Its easy to slag off the tories but lets not forget what labour did,lets start with gold.
Yes gold is at an all time high and good old mr Brown sold all ours off cheap.
That stupid decision alone cost britain 11 BILLION, far more than the cuts will save.

It doesnt matter who you vote for the government gets in,they are all as bad as each other.

The benefits systems needs a complete overhaul so bring it on.

Get real! An awful lot of people who are working full time do not earn £500 a week. What's disgraceful is that people can have children that they can't afford, and the government happily gives them £500 a week. It's YOUR views that sum up broken Britain - i.e. this disgraceful benefits culture.

DHSS - 1988 the department was split into a separate Department of Health and the Department of Social Security.

So when was the last time you had a job?

I've worked since I was 16 and have only every been unemployed for 3 months during the past 30 years.

Why should I support you if you can't be bothered to get up off your lazy ar$e and work.

There is such a thing as voluntary or community work - after all why should we pay you to sit at home doing nothing. Get out and do something. I don't clear 500 a week - more like 400 and I have to pay all of my bills - yet the poor hard done by scroungers bleat about being capped at 500!

Why have three children if you can't afford to support them? There's plenty of people in good jobs that put off having children until a time when they have saved enough money or are earning enough to afford it. Nobody should have a god given right to have children and expect the state to support them!

I’m going to be controversial.

You say you were married, but left when you were pregnant with your fourth due to domestic abuse? From my experience of domestic abuse, rarely does it just start overnight. So did you decide to have a fourth child with someone who you knew beat you up? Or did you have a child with someone you hardly knew? Either way you made a very, very poor decision.

That sounds harsh, I realise, but as I get older I realise that there is a swathe of the population in this country who do not possess the ability to make responsible decisions for themselves. For them, everything that goes wrong is someone else’s fault. Only last week, there was a story in a local paper of a family living in a council flat who were moaning because they’d decided to have a fifth child and the council wouldn’t provide a bigger house for them.

Neither of them worked and hadn’t for some years (which of course, was everyone else’s fault as well) yet they decided to have a FIFTH child. It’s absurd, absolutely insane. These people have spent years just crashing through their lives, from problem to problem and it is us – the mugs who go out to work – that have to dig deeper and deeper in our pockets to fund these poor, poor decisions.

So personally, I think it is about time that a cap was introduced. It is about time that “not working” is not seen as an acceptable lifestyle choice. It is about time that the benefit system is there as a safety net and helps those that truly fall on hard times, not the feckless idiots who think that the government will just keep bailing them out ad infinitum.

Bring back the workhouse. You'd soon see the work shy scroungers find a job then. This country has got far too soft.

RoisinR i wasnt referring to politicians. there are people who are making millions out of ID theft and its only by error or someone grassing that the DWP find out about it. I also think a lot of genuine people in need will suffer but i dont agree with those having one child after the other and expecting to stay on social. Its not only just those with children as discussed here, but there are plenty of single people who are on sickness benefit as they are on drugs or alcoholics being given more money!!!

And please don't forget the really chubby people and all their associated health problems. An extra tax on pizza delivery could well mean this country avoids triple dip recession.

Drivers, boozers and smokers are all taxed to the hilt but most still go to work.

exactly. because people who walk round with their 'ive got a job' or 'i work' banner, it doesnt mean theyre not fiddling. and some have accountants who know how to work the system. also there are a lot of people who do work part time and claim tax credits that are a larger govt handout than if they were out of work. i do agree that the govt has been too soft and allowed many people to sit on benefits for years. lets not also forget that companies like starbucks have avoided paying millions in taxes whilst chasing ordinary working people for every penny.
