All three Kingston Blockbuster stores to close All three Kingston Blockbuster stores to close

All three Blockbuster stores in Kingston, Tolworth and Surbiton are slated for closure, according to administrator Deloitte.

No dates have been set, with stores set to be assessed according to their sales figures, a spokeswoman said.

A total of 160 branches of the video and games chain are to close nationally, with staff facing redundancy.

Lee Manning, joint administrator, said: “Having reviewed the portfolio with management, the store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold.

"We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time.

"We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support."

This year alone: Jessops, HMV, Blockbuster.

Soon, the only chain on the high street will be JobCentre. Which is ironic, as they won't have any jobs either...

...add the ridiculously named Parking Shop to the list of retailers that will remain in the town.
Parking enforcement is about the only growth industry in the borough, so there'll be an even greater demand for somewhere to pay fines.

Ironically, parking controls, properly enforced, actually increase the amount of parking spaces available to the general public.

In that regard (if no other) parking controls are good for local business.

This is a shame. How the hell are they going to find someone to occupy a unit that size in Tolworth Broadway?

I always though that the Tolworth store was a 'blast from the past' even by Blockbuster standards. The size and position of meant that it was only really attractive to those who were prepared to drive some distance to rent a video and then drive back the next day to avoid a late fee when returning it!

The neighbourhood ones like Surbiton made a bit more sense, but it still seem a very old-fashioned way to rent films now.

As an ex employee of "Apollo Video" its a pity some customers chose "Blockbusters" as had they used us Apollo may still be in business. We offered excellent service to our customers.Glad "Blockbusters pulled out of buying Apollo in the early 2001 even though we sank in 2006/7. My days at apollo were great both in store and working at our head offices in tolworth.Very sad for blockbuster employees hope they all manage to get work and other jobs.
