A famous redhead with hair to be proud of: Prince Harry

A famous redhead with hair to be proud of: Rupert Grint

First published in News by

I WITNESSED something absolutely gobsmacking this week. I was strolling through town with a female friend and stopped to look in a shop window. In those few seconds a man stepped forward, spoke a few words to her and then casually walked on down the road.

When I asked what he wanted, I couldn’t believe my ears. Not only had he rudely asked why her hair was the colour it was, but he’d also said how disgusting it looked.

So, purple, lime green, turquoise — what colour was her hair?

No, none of these, she is in fact a natural redhead and has never added any colour — despite the advice of complete tossers like this.

Having been a redhead all her life she says she’s used to it and has long been aware of the ‘Marmite’ factor. Surely this shouldn’t be the case?

Now, I’m no fan of ridiculous PC nonsense, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with a bit of harmless mickey taking, but surely it’s not right that an attractive woman, sporting the hair colour she was born with, which is, incidentally a beautiful auburn, should have to be subjected to this sort of uncalled-for abuse?

I’ve only been racially-abused once, though I did get a lot of flack at school about the size of my ears. But, by comparison, and all joking aside, I clearly have no concept of the sort of abuse suffered by my friend.

Previously I had no idea of the discrimination faced by redheaded people on a daily basis. I don’t suppose I will, overnight, become a completely caring person, but it has made me consider the feelings of others a little more.

What do you think? Is mickey taking of ginger haired people akin to racial abuse? Have you ever been picked on for some characteristic such as hair, ears or nose? Add your comments below and vote in our poll.

Are you really suggesting that mocking of ginger people is a serious problem in our society?

Ok, so some bloke was rude about your friend's hair. That must be incredibly rare. I don't believe that many people go up to strangers and tell them that their hair looks rubbish (whatever colour or style it is)..

@Gypo Joe- as a female redhead, that is none of your nevermind.

@ron.1952- you are right. Young Harry (poor kid) does indeed look like his father. Nice of Prince Charles to take care of him anyway.

@Tip-top- yes, we are. Pretty powerful ones too. ;-)

People say hateful things all the time. As an American, I don't understand it. What is the issue with redheads?

Unfortunately, this has happened to me as well, more than once. Although I have to say it is males that have said nasty things to me, complete strangers. I have been called a 'Ginger Dog' by a group of people in the High Street and they were middle aged men. They shouted that I should be put down. I once worked in an office where they continually made comments on a daily basis, until I left. The boss found it funny, so there was no way of stopping it. It's sad to say that when I am out or get a new job etc.. I do expect it and there is a marmite effect, as suggested in the article. I can't say it hasn't effected me and I do believe it is abuse, as it never stops. To accept it as normal is sad, but there really are people out there that hate red heads and believe they have a right to say nasty things to that person. I presume there is something wrong with these people, as their behaviour is unacceptable and just down right rude. I'm proud of my hair and always will be. Those that feel the need and right to do this, need to get a life and learn some manners.

Ah, I see. That's like people of color in America calling each other foul names that white Americans use to call them in hate, to try to take the stigma out of it. My son-in-law made the mistake of using the word "nigga (****)" in a humorous way around me to call a friend out on a comment the other young man stated. My son-in-law is white/hispanic/black mix. He DOES NOT use that word around me any longer after my reaction to it.

Like most societies, “name calling” appears to be a usual part of life, whether it is being said in jest or in anger.
At the moment, it seems that only racial aspects are deemed illegal (foul language, within context is a given), but I can see the use of the word “ginger”, “fat”, “bald” etc all falling into this category by of verbally abusing someone.

As a redhead ive had to live with the stigma attached to it. Its tough and its easy enough to say the normal "they're just jealous" but it doesn't stop it hurting. My teenage sister is just starting to get it now (she is also a redhead), it normally starts at school (primarily senior school) and i was lead to believe that once i'd done the 4years
Of constant bullying that I would be free but no.. Far from it. Even now I get parents telling their children to point and laugh at the gingernut and have frequently had abuse shouted at me from cars as they drive past (ginger being the norm) and its painful. Luckily I have found a man who says he is proud to have a flaming goddess by his side and who makes me feel good aboit my hair. So yes it is abuse and it needs to be stopped

One of my best mates is part of the “factor 50” club and he thrives on being “different / unique”. Yeah, he’s subjected to the usual “ribbing”, which he takes in his stride and he has been on the end of the previously mentioned abuse tactics dished out by some.
To be honest, I always thought the “ginger” fascination was all done within a joking manner and not one to be considered as “serious”, but judging from some of the replies above and the actual article, I appear to wrong…...just for the record, that doesn’t mean I go about laughing at anyone with a slight tinge of ginge, but more my mate. Never understood random abuse….not unless you’re northern ;o)

Strawberry blonde is a Southern moniker in the US. It's actually a sweet compliment. It's blonde with a dash of red, it's a lighter shade of amber. It's a very pretty color, especially with green or blue eye color. Dishwater blonde is a light brown with blonde highlights. Ash blonde is a dark blonde with a few platinum and soft brown highlights.

Hypocrisy stinks doesn't it?[/p]
ianm500 were you reading the shopper at work in the firestation ? I like a good read before I go to sleep too. How many 'frames' did you get in today ?[/p]
Thanks, you forgot to mention the gold plated pension, being paid to sleep, only working for half the year, having a 2nd job which we don't pay tax on, retiring at 50, etc etc etc nice work if u can get it, I'll buy you a couple of lemons to suck on when I get my 120k lump sum! Water of a ducks back mate, The Sun and Daily Mail said all that 10 years ago, try better next time & don't forget to check your smoke alarm you might need it when they close 17 plus stations and your waiting 20 mins for a fire engine, try not to bite next time.[/p]
Oh the irony is so strong. Hold still Billy Sollicks while I get the hook out of your mouth. By the way are you a ginger fireman too, now that would be to F'in much.[/p]
The best way to deal with trolls is to reply to their initial comment and then make no further reference to the original post, they hate it. Sitting in their tiny bedsit hunched over their grubby keyboard 'trolling' & desperately waiting for that email stating a 'new comment' has been posted. I'll have to work for over 50 years before I can retire. Early retirement ,,,I wish !!

But lets take a closer look at your other posts first. If your sunning yourself in a pool as u claim and judging by the time you posted it u must be on d other side of d world! How very odd that u should choose to start posting on d news shopper while relaxing abroad, is that your priority to read and post on the news shopper on-line? If u have so many employees u must be very successful and wealthy, surely posting d comments u have including ones on other subjects would not only be beneath you but why would u be so obsessed with firefighters pay and conditions? Why did u claim on another board u have to work over 50 years before retirement? That makes u in your early 20's does it not? Plus your choice of words and style of writing is not of a successful businessman but of someone very bitter and somewhat envious with typical working class roots, nothing to be ashamed of but try and keep it believable. The LFB are not recruiting now for 2 years but honestly the entrance exam is quite easy but u normally have 40 applicants for each post, good luck and happy trolling.
