A new postnatal depression (PND) support group starting in Clapham in January received a much needed financial boost thanks to local south west London residents and businesses who raised more than £1,200 at a charity event.

More than 70 people attended the event where local artists donated their work and prizes given by 13 local businesses were auctioned to raise funds. The event was hosted by local business mum, Anne Kennedy-Levesque of Mini Muse art classes to raise money for the Cedar House Support Group, a registered charity helping mothers and families who are experiencing PND.

Cedar House Support Group Trustee, Zoe Cassidy, said: “We were really touched by the generosity of Anne and of all the people who attended the fundraising event. There was a fantastic turn out and it was great to see so many people supporting mums in need.

“We really think a support group is needed in this Nappy Valley area of London. PND can often be a frightening and isolating illness. By attending a support group, this helps mums to share their feelings and thoughts with others experiencing similar symptoms.

"We have fought hard to raise funds to establish this much needed group in Clapham and this money is a great Christmas gift. It will go a long way to supporting the Clapham group.

“On behalf of Cedar House Support Group, I would like to thank everyone who donated. This event was made possible because of the generosity of local businesses who donated fantastic prizes which were auctioned on the night.”

The Cedar House Support Group provides a safe and supportive environment for women experiencing postnatal depression. The charity, established in Surrey in 2004, has provided invaluable support to many women in need.

Postnatal Depression is a recognised and treatable condition, which affects approximately one in five mothers and one in ten fathers.

The support group will start on January 11 at the Weir Link Children’s Centre in Clapham www.theweirlink.org.

Places must be booked in advance by contacting the charity’s director of counselling.
