The youngest and oldest members of 1st Hersham Scout Group celebrated their 100th anniversary with a trip down memory lane.

From the youngest beaver scout to Jack Warner, who became a leader at the group in the 1940s, the event celebrated the transformation of the club across the years.

Themed as a culmination of a year of 100th anniversary celebrations, the party featured a reunion barbecue and a camp for all the beavers, cubs and scouts.

Les Holmes, current scout group chairman, said: “We’ve had loads of emails from people saying what a good day it was, which it really was. We get a good response from the community and we always try to get them involved in it.”

First formed in October 1912, the scout group has seen innovative changes, including the introduction of girls to all sections, new uniforms, programmes and headquarters.

Now based in Burwood Road, the youth sections meet weekly and enjoy a range of activities, including an explorer scout programme for 14 to 18-year-old thrill seekers.

Mr Holmes said the group had one of the highest numbers of queen scouts, the highest grade achievable, in the country.

Growing in popularity, the group is looking to build a new headquarters with a range of modern facilities and space for its membership of more than 100 young people.
