Princess Alice Hospice is to become a regional centre for training for care homes, providing a national quality standard for end of life care.
The hospice was one of three organisations to receive regional centre status, joining four existing centres.
The Gold Standard Framework (GSF) in Care Homes programme enables staff to deliver more personalised care, providing residents with a better quality of life consistent with their wishes.
The training will ensure care home staff are equipped to care for people who are dying, to reduce hospitalisations and the numbers of people who inappropriately die on acute hospital wards.
As a regional centre, Princess Alice Hospice will increase the number of care homes adopting the scheme and improve the quality and coordination of care provided across the south-east.
Jane Berg, head of education at Princess Alice Hospice, said: “We are delighted to be awarded Gold Standard Framework regional centre status.
“The GSF Care Home programme can give frontline staff the skills they need to offer more personalised care and ensure the care homes have the structures in place to support residents and their families at end of life.”
