Born tree: Ella Fielding made this tree all but immortal
A chainsaw artist and wood carver has finished her latest creation in Esher.
Ella Fielding came to the attention of the sculpture’s commissioners, Peter and Sue, after reading an article about the fielder carving at Esher Cricket Club.
The couple, who had been looking into ways to save a tree that had been cut down, saw the article separately and both cut it out to show each other.
Ms Fielding met the couple twice to gain a feel for the style they wanted, before deciding on a carving in the spirit of the elfin oak in Kensington.
Several ideas and designs which incorporated British wildlife and mythical creatures were suggested before arriving at the design that became this carving.
The sculpture took eight days to be carved with chainsaws and was finished with an angle grinder, file sander and a blow torch.
Ms Fielding said: “It was one of my most fun carvings I have done, not just because it was a great piece to carve, but Peter and Sue are just lovely and I really enjoyed my endless teas and great chats with them.
“I am really grateful to have been asked and am very pleased they love it.”
