The first sections of the Walton Bridge arches were put in place this week.

The arches of the bridge, which will eventually span the Thames, are part of the first major new road bridge over the river in more than 20 years.

Construction of the bridge began ten months ago and residents will now be able to gain an insight into what the finished crossing will look like.

A replacement for the bridge, which links Walton and Shepperton, had been fiercely opposed by residents, but was finally approved by the Secretary of State for Transport after two public inquiries.

Due for completion by summer 2013, the bridge will replace two long-serving temporary bridges, which serve around 34,000 vehicles on week days.

A community meeting will take place at The Playhouse, Bridge Street, on Wednesday, December 5 with a presentation on the works achieved so far, and those planned over the coming months.
