Met Police insurance checks near Nugent Centre cause tailbacks

TRAFFIC is at a standstill on the outskirts of Orpington this morning (October 23) as police carry out insurance checks.

Long queues have built up near the Nugent Centre in Cray Avenue while officers check drivers’ details.

It is not yet known how long the Bromley police will be running the operation, which is causing tailbacks to the A20.

One of the drivers’ stuck in the jams this morning was News Shopper editor Andy Parkes.

He said: “I appreciate the boys in blue need to keep themselves busy with cuts to the Met police looming but they should not do it by disrupting people’s journeys into work."

Did you get stuck in the traffic? What do you think of the operation? Have your say below.

I hardly think the police are making a massive impact on the traffic, the road is a nightmare all hours of the day!!

What an idiot!
Are you seriously saying that the police are 'keeping themselves busy' to keep their jobs?
As an 'editor' you should know that the police cannot be made redundant.
When do you think the police should run this type of operation,at midnight when no one is about?
But then,of course,MR.SELFISH Andy Parkes will not be travelling to work and be inconvenienced!
What a useless editor/journalist and what a selfish individual.

Orpington is a favourite spot for police looking for cheap points, another trick is to wait at mini roundabouts on quiet side roads trying to catch motorists who do not make a signal.

Make mine a bitter! No prizes for guessing who's had his collar felt for driving offences.

Actually it was an ex girlfriend of mine, who noticed the frequency of the same after some ghastly policewoman boasted "I'm doin' you for X, contrary to section Y of the Z Act, 19whatever. I have never been prosecuted for a driving offence because I always drive like a granny.

I'm sure this farce will catch a few insurance/tax dodgers and a couple of spliff smokers.
In other news a man waited an hour for an ambulance.
Do ya think just maybe our priorities need looking at.

I guess Mr Parkes is off your Christmas card list too.

The more uninsured / un taxed vehicles OFF the road the better - and I understand they have a habit of having other faults / being driven by people with other offences

So well done the police!

(And yes, I have been hit by an uninsured driver - had she been caught perhaps she wouldn't have driven in to me!)

I had to go up there this morning and while yes, it was slow it wasn't at a standstill and in fact coming back (towards Bexley) which is the side of the road the police were on was quicker than going. I don't have to use the road that often but I always expect it to be slow when I do as there is normally a lot of traffic on it!

This is a Met wide operation to take uninsured drivers off the road. They are a menace to all of us who pay our insurance and even more of a menace to those of us that uninsured hit. This was done all over London today. If you're uninsured, you will be caught, and you will be sorry!!!

The queue is usually back to at least the Broomwood, often in rush hour back to Homebase so doesn't sound much different

Yea right a slapped wrist and the license you never had will be endorsed, and/or the piece of crap you were driving will be crushed.

Quite frankly I can think of more pressing concerns for the Met Police than a few expired tax discs & the odd driver whose insurance payment has bounced. Anybody hit by an uninsured driver should contact the Motor Insurers Bureau, it's not like it never happens. As for being sorry, if uninsured drivers really are the major criminals that plods are currently making them out to be, I doubt if they will care too much.

Uninsured drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents, more likely to be unlicenced and more likely to be involved in other crime. Any operation to get them off the road is welcome. I'd happily suffer 1 morning's minor inconvenience!

But I don't think the police can be blamed for the queues - just come along Sevenoaks way, a lady with a pram crossed the road in front of me & she got to the Nugent before I did !

Once past the Nugent no problem

Heading south along the bypass from Homebase towards the Nugent is usually slow going 7 days pw. Since the bus route was removed on the opposite carriageway, however, traffic heading north has been flowing far more freely (surprise, surprise, NOT*) and it is this carriageway which was partially closed by the police yesterday.

* Despite the clear evidence of vastly improved traffic flow and reduced congestion, I think we can all expect a return to bus lane induced mayhem when Chislehurst Road bridge reopens next month...

Stuck in traffic on Cray Avenue. Hungry and feeling worn out. Bored of watching the police take some low lifes car while sat in your own. Stop at SKULLS in front of Walkers Builders Merchants near Poverest Road. Skull does a wide range of quality food items, lovely fresh food, amazing prices and a real nice bloke as well. I did and laughed as some herbert lost his rusty wheels to a little "pleb" in blue. Best morning in ages.

Get every illegal car/bike driver off the road and impose heavy fines. Those who are legal with insurance are penalised by having to pay extra premiums to cover those who dont pay. Well done to the police........now catch more people on the phone when driving

£200 fine, £150 recovery fee + £20 a day storage and 6 points on your licence!

A few of the many discouraging things about not having insurance and of course having to walk home with your belongings!
