Woman saved by riverside rescuers

A young woman was rescued from the Thames shoreline after falling onto mudflats as the tide came in last night (May 20).

Paramedics gave her first aid on the mudflats near Erebus Drive, Thamesmead, before she was put in a basket stretcher'.

Firefighters then set up a pulley system to pull the woman, who is thought to be in her 20s, to safety.

It is believed she hurt one of her legs when she fell at around 10.30pm.

A spokesman from Plumstead fire station said: "Another couple of minutes and she would have been covered in water because the tide had turned."

Around 25 firefighters, from Plumstead, Woolwich, Bexley and Lewisham, took part in the rescue which took around 30 minutes.
