Hornets crushed by rampant Hull
Darius Henderson celebrates his opening goal
Darius Henderson celebrates his opening goal

Watford's dream of an immediate return to the Premiership was shattered at the KC Stadium this evening as Hull set up a winner-takes-all showdown with Bristol City at Wembley a week on Saturday with a resounding 4-1 victory.

Trailing by two goals after the first leg, Watford halved the arrears through Darius Henderson after just 12 minutes of a rousing match and looked capable of staging the most unlikeliest of comebacks during a first-half that witnessed arguably their best footballing performance of the season.

But Hull dashed their hopes with a crucial goal just before half-time from Nick Barmby and then rubber-stamped their place in the final when substitute Caleb Folan powered in a header on the hour mark. Richard Garcia added the coup de grace with a superb individual goal late on while Nathan Doyle's simply rubbed salt into Watford's gaping wounds by scoring a deflected fourth.

While Hull, who won the tie 6-1 on aggregate, are now dreaming of playing top-flight football for the first time in their history, Watford are left wondering how they blew an eight-point lead at the top of the table and contemplating another season in the Championship.

The game exploded into life after just 90 seconds when Nathan Ellington, who enjoyed an excellent first half before fading badly, caught Wayne Brown with a high foot. The Hull players were incensed by the challenge but referee Mark Clattenburg diffused the situation excellently and just let the Watford striker off with a warning.

John Eustace enjoyed Watford's first attempt at goal following some neat interplay, but it was heart in your mouth time at the other end when Adrian Mariappa's header back to Lee was telegraphed by Fraizer Campbell who was quickly smothered by the alert Watford keeper.

But that was the only blemish on a hugely impressive start from the Hornets who stroked the ball around with real panache and confidence. And their neat interplay reaped dividends after just 12 minutes when a patient, incisive move involving the excellent Mat Sadler, Jobi McAnuff and Lee Williamson resulted in Henderson tucking the ball home from close range. It was Henderson's 13th of the season and what a time to get it.

The confidence surged through the veins of the players thereafter and they controlled the first half, causing a nervous home side problems down both flanks and through the middle where Nathan Ellington, playing in a slightly withdrawn role, was causing havoc.

It took Hull until the 21st minute to win their first corner and the only time they really tested Lee was when Dean Windass fired a speculative volley over the bar from long range. Sensing their first ever appearance at Wembley, the home crowd were becoming increasingly edgy and Phil Brown would have been the manager praying for half-time as a first-half Watford controlled drew to a close.

However just when Boothroyd was about the contemplate delivering his half-time team-talk and commend his players on half a job well done, disaster struck. A cross was headed into the air by Jay DeMerit, Lee came to collected only to hesitate and find himself in no-man's land. Dean Windass headed the dropping ball over the stranded Watford keeper and Barmby raced in to nod the ball over the line. It was just the tonic the home side needed and left Watford punch drunk.

Watford suffered a lucky escape just after the restart when Lee Williamson appeared to intercept some neat close control from Windass with his hand, but even the most ardent Hull fan would not have begrudged the Hornets a slice of good fortune following events in the first leg at Vicarage Road.

Needing two unanswered goals to take the match into extra time Boothroyd went for broke on 58 minutes, introducing Tamas Priskin for Mariappa in bold attacking move. The move almost paid off immediately, the Hungarian forcing a fine save from Bo Myhill with a rasping shot following some neat link-up play with Smith. The winger then forced Wayne Brown, the former Hornet, to nervously slice the ball across his own goalmouth with a teasing centre.

Hull boss Phil Brown could have switched to a more defensive formation to counter Watford's renewed attacking threat but, to his credit, he stuck to his guns and replaced Windass, who received a standing ovation, with Caleb Folan in a like for like swap.

And it was Folan who put the tie beyond the reach of the plucky visitors, planting a firm header past Lee from a Garcia cross to send the home crowd delirious. Folan almost helped put the icing on the cake by crossing for fellow Craig Fagan to head over the bar, while Fagan whistled a sizzling effort just over the bar seconds later.

In a rare second-half attack from the visitors, Henderson saw a header from a McAnuff corner cleared off the line by Bryan Hughes and could not muster enough power to force home the rebound.

The remainder of the match turned into a celebration for the home supporters, with a Mexican wave sweeping round the ground and cries of 'We are going up' reverberating around a jumping KC Stadium that erupted when Garcia waltzed through the heart of the Watford defence to score a stunning third on 88 minutes. The home fans were in dream land 60 seconds later when Doyle beat Lee with a deflected fourth on the break.

It was all too much for the dejected visiting fans who were left contemplating a long journey home and wondering just where it all went so badly wrong.

Taxi for Demerit.

Great effort from the other 10 but I'll pack Jay's bags for him - he was at fault for all 4, absolutely atrocious.

I hope Bristol City hammer them in the final.

I hope Boothroyd stays.

What the bloody hell are you talking about? Let's get some facts straight here:-
* 1 win in 16 matches and you want to keep the manager?
*we cannot play decent football and yet to think it's all down to DeMerit?
* Why do you want Bristol City to hammer them? What's the justification for this exactly?

Enough of all this apathy and feeling sory for AB. He's ruined the club and needs to go. If a doctor made as many mistakes then he would've been struck off in November. He needs to go. 1 win in 16 is a disgrace. Watford have turned into a bunch of spineless premadonnas and keeping AB will lead to a relegation dogfight next season.

Bloody disgrace.

Well, all in all an excellent effort by the boys tonight and on Saturday really. We've been undone by poor defending and the likes of Stewart, Lee, Doyley, Demerit need to leave now. None of them are match-winners. Basically we gifted Hull the first 4 goals in the tie and if you do that you'll lose. All the result indicates is we went for it. Time to regroup in the summer. Keep Aidy, clear out the dross and raise money through sales.

This division will be excellent next season. Some top days out. Plus it'll probably be decided on goal difference from 1st to 24th if this year is anything to go by! Enjoy the summer glory hornets, roll on 08/09!

Well the score may have flattered Hull but sadly we reverted to type and played far too many long balls and failed to get our wingers (who had the beating of their markers) into the game.

I used to think that Birtles and Kamara knew nothing about the game, now I KNOW they know nothing. Henderson making all the difference they said - pah.

Hull were nervous and we certainly showed the appetite early on but a stupid mistake let them back in just before half time and Boothroyd then made a daft substitution which opened up loads of space between our midfield and back three which Hull exploited. I'm afraid Jay was at fault or partly at fault for all four goals.

AB: "We've shown over the two games that we can play a bit of football".

We've been beaten 6-1 you bloody idiot. Can this man not see what's wrong with the club? Sick of it I am.
Posted by: JimBob, Watford on 9:56pm Wed 14 May 08
Oh and to the inevitable 'sack Aidy' bunch - if you're prepared to name someone who will come in for nothing, do the job on a minimal budget and do better next season feel free. And if you can find someone to pay the compensation too that'd be nice. Cos we'll be skint otherwise. Yes, the form has been rubbish. But there's obviously been a lot going on behind the scenes with mediocre players (Jay, Jordan etc) disrupting the team harmony.

Time to consolidate. Build the new stand, shift out some rubbish and lose some of the plastic moaners in the stands we've picked up since 05/06. We'd do best to be without their 'support'.

Congratulations to Hull you beat us fair and square on the night.

Well done to Clattenburg well reffed.

Aidy you made a mistake...Mariappa should not have been picked ahead of Doyley.

As for the team's performance...all the hard work was undone by an utterly stupid mistake by a man who has done his best but just isnt good enough. On top of that several times Demerit and Mariappa made mistakes and looked somewhat exposed.

The second goal resulted in Jay deciding to mark Bromby instead of Folan. Ramage got it right send for a taxi.

The third goal was another mistake by Mr USA and the fourth was as a result of being overwhelmed.

I cant fault the style of football, Darius played well in the new style and I think next year if Shittu stays and then we need cover for Doyley and a new keeper.

Based on the last two games, if we had played like that from the beginning of November we would have finished above the baggies.

Well done the Horns you played a good 180 minutes, some nice soccer and Aidy appears at last to have seen the light.

I hope the cuts that are made do not damage the majority of the players out there and with Kabba, Shittu, Williams plus the youngsters we have a squad and manger to go forward with...Roll on next season.

HiHo, I like your style. A positive to take out of today's game is that we could've lost 4-0. Things must be looking up for us (Aidy's Book of Spin, entry #1003)

Cover for Doyley? Taxi for Doyley! The bloke doesn't know how to mark, gets a nose bleed crossing the halfway line, can't pass and can barely throw the ball. He's the exact type of player we need to say goodbye to. Nice guy no doubt. But doesn't cut the mustard.

As well as sell the two overpaid oafs(kabba and ellington.

Its going to be a long summer...

Bottom line is if we'd gone 1-0 up after 4 mins of the 1st leg there's no way we would have lost - that's not Aidy's fault.

If we'd had 11 for the last half hour we could have gone to there place with a 1 goal defecit - not Aidy's fault.

Very few teams bounce straight back up.

Shittu's too good for us and should go to a Prem side, we should sign Davenport.

JimBob - don't hold your breath for any sensible plans from the Miserable Boo'ers. I've been asking them the same questions for months on what they want, who they want, how they're going to run it, fund it, etc and nothing ever comes back other than another cheap insult or three at Aidy.

I agree we've played worse than we could or should since October but 6th place is not a failure.

Go ask Charlton, Sheff Utd, Wolves, Ipswich, Norwich, Cardiff (last season they finished lower than we did after blowing a bigger lead), etc fans if they'd have swapped their League position with us. Bet they'll all say yes.
Posted by: JimBob, Watford on 10:07pm Wed 14 May 08
It wasn't a daft substitution. Or would you rather we'd have defended the 1-1 draw on the night? Admit it, you don't quite get football, do you? It passes you by.

Here's a hint: you're 3-1 down on aggregate with 35 minutes to go. You go 3 at the back because you no longer have anything to lose. The result is irrelevant. But I don't expect some of you lot to get that...

Aidy has made some mistakes this season poor tactics and poor signing, one win in 16 games is not good enough. Time to make some changes this summer new keeper, new centre back, two new midfielders and two new fowards, players that want to play for us. If Aidy dosn't make these changes he will be out of his job by christmas

Jimbob- In case you don't know Stewart has already gone. Defenders are never 'match winners', although we gifted them all both goals at home and all 4 goals tonight but at least we had a go, we didn't take our chances and Hull did, simple as that. Who ever goes up will come straight back down as can't see any decent players wanting to play for Hull or Bristol City.

Top comment. Spot on. But common sense will get you no where round these here parts.

I don't deny for a second we've been dire for long spells of this season. But football isn't just a bigger version of some computer game. You set your squad in August and if it doesn't come these days you're stuffed. For what it's worth I think Aidy knew by October that he'd signed a couple of duffers, but it's too late by then to change things. C'est la vie. We could be bottom of League 1...

We played excellent football on Sunday but were robbed by the referee. We played excellent football today till Demerit and Lee decided to gift Hull a goal. You cannot blame AB for his thinking in these two games. HOWEVER, he must take the responsibility for only wining one game in sixteen. I'd like to hear his excuses for that abysmal record. As for the playoffs, losing was not his fault.

It amazes me sometimes how people moan weekin week out about the way we play, and when we do actually pass the ball they still moan. We had all the play in the first half and stood a good chance of getting level only for Lee to have yet another rush of blood which habded Hull the game. Aidy had no option but to gamble with more forward leaving the defence exposed. Desperately need new keeper and right back.

The damage was done when we sold players. Aidy has also been unlucky with red cards - very unlucky in view of the subsequent succesful appeals. Hull played well and I am sure on current form they will be going up. I wish them success and happiness in what will probably be a single season in the Prem.

Aidy won't be sacked but we need to start playing good football and getting results next season at the start.

Another poor defensive display tonight.

I doubt too many people will be after DeMerit now.

Jimbob,

It was a daft substitution because it handed Hull the initiative and allowed them to play to their strengths.

And how anyone can think we played excellent football tonight. We worked hard, we showed commitment but what did we actually create in the first half? We had far more chances on Sunday when we played with five in midfield and passed the ball. We should have taken Ellington off, bought Ainsworth on and pushed Smith in the middle just behind the lummox and encouraged Willimson and the full backs to push on leaving Eustace as protection.
Posted by: Happy Grazer, Aylesbury on 10:42pm Wed 14 May 08
Well lets face it, as rightly pointed out in an earlier comment, the damage has been done since November, not in the last 2 games where we seem to have played a bit of decent stuff for a change, I counted 11 of those on duty tonight who can get on there bikes, sod getting them a taxi, they've had enough out of the club already, if there is a wholesale clear out of the dead wood and a change of tactics where we play football next season and not head ball, then we could do it, but if not it'll be Aidy out by Xmas, but I have a sneaking feeling that whatever occurs, the damage has been done for Aidy and co.

to lose any two legged game 6-1 suggests that the losing team is weak and i believe Watford have spent 9 million on that starting line up tonight..!!! Aidrian has spent more money than vialli, has had a little bit of success but he needs guidance homer get the GREAT Taylor back otherwise a young manager with a lot of potential will end up as youth coach back at leeds..!!!

Not our time this time out and probably never was. Hull didn't have to work for the first 3 goals of the whole tie that ultimately undid us which is frustrating as we played ok over the 2 legs. Sounds like AB is going to change things style wise if you take him at his word. Unlike some on here i am old enough to have learnt how to handle disappointment. Football supporting is not for you if you can't. Roll on the retain list, the 08/09 fixtures and the 1st test against NZ tomorrow.

2 top 6 finishes out of 2 attempts in championship is pretty good ... and continuity is the way forward, look at fergy, wenger, even gradi at crewe!!!

if aidy rectifys the style then i ll back him, if by xmas its more of the same then perhaps its time 4 a new start ...

ironic that we played good footy in the play offs but came up 5 goals short ... just as aidy said he d rather win ugly than lose pretty!!! perhaps he should have stuck by his guns 4 those crucial 2 games!!!!

Big up to all the fans that travelled tonight..
Aidy has said after match that style of play has to change next season...I,m afraid i have to agree with comments regarding R.L.,and J.D.was a bit pony tonight, but lets not start slagging off a former watford hero, who until injury v west brom, was our captain..
Short memories,a lot of you....
I reckon that championship will be a **** to get out of with the teams now gracing it,but if aidys promise of a change of style is real and not more spin, then we will compete in what i think will be a cracking league next season...

This match mirrored our season. Great first 43 minutes comfortably in control. Then concede needless goal (Lee and Demerit to blame), revert to hoofball most of second half and concede 3 more.

Defending was appalling, particularly Demerit who was at fault for all 4 goals (don't blame Mariappa, he hasn't been picked for 2 months, and playing him instead of donkey Doyley was right)

Apart from one shot from Priskin, we never looked capable of scoring in the 2nd half.

Well done Hull.

As for this squad, we need to have a massive clearout. Taxis for Demerit, Kabba, Rinaldi, Jackson, Ellington, Williamson, Hoskins, Bangura, Poom, Francis.

Give Robinson a run upfront, and bring in some of the youngsters like Henderson, Avinel and Aloi, who will bring some pace into the side.

Finally give AB one more chance, but if its still hoofball he should go by November.

I'm with those who blame a crap ref and crass individual errors for our play-off defeat - we've played some of our best football over the past 2 games. Even Ellington gave his all tonight, and Darius and Saddler also stood out. Mariappa, Demerit and Lee were poor, however - we will have another disappointing season next time out unless we can cut out the constant stream of stupid defensive mistakes by these guys and Shittu which have killed our season as much as a lack of goals.

Aidy in - he desrves the chance to turn this round.

Last 16 games not good enough? True but the season is not just 16 games is it. We finished 6th. Not too shabby. If Aidy did go, who would come? Who whould want to? Who could garantee (spl?) any better? I can't think of any realistic proven manager that has not also had failer.

You **** ignorant ****. Its because of docile twats like you that this club has underachieved for twenty years.

Straight after the match I said to my mate 'The first thing I'm going to do when I get home is go on the WO website and give them a piece of my mind'. Well, maybe I got a lot of you wrong because the comments are much more balanced than I'd expected. Yes, there has been a problem with our style towards the end of the season and yes that has been a problem compounded by negative 'supporters' (who knows how many draws would have been wins had we been cheered on?). BUT, Boothroyd has got the team playing the fluid, passing game so many (including myself)had craved in the past 2 games and we have lost 6-1 on aggregate. Now you could say that means hoofing is a far more effective gameplan but I think Watford have done themselves proud in attack over the past 180 minutes. In defence perhaps hoofing is best mind you! The boo boys wanted passing, attacking football and that's what they've got in the past 2 games so are they still calling for Aidy's head? If the manager gets sacked now it will be a travesty and ruin any chance we have of being a top flight team in the next 3 years. Be proud of how we've played in the last 2 games, realise 6-1 is a SERIOUSLY flattering aggregate for Hull, realise we scored the first goal of the 180 minutes and at least give AB another season to prove himself. Don't be the jerks in the phrase 'knee jerk'! If we play the ball on the ground next season we CAN do a West Brom. COME ON YOU 'ORNS!

"this club has underachieved for twenty years"

Last comment of the night but you absolute TIT! UNDERACHIEVED for 20 YEARS!!!! HAHAHAHAAAA YOU MUPPET! So 2 spells in the top flight and 3 cup semis in the past TEN years is an underachievement? Go home and choose another team because we don't need people like you 'supporting' WFC!

On a lighter note, forget the lucozade next season, what we need is DRENCH SPRING WATER..
If you saw the advert, youll,e know what i mean.....Ellington to come good next season with a change of style..
FOREVER A HORN
FOREVER BORIN
Yeah,not like you mate..
Should rename yourself repetative,oh slasher of pants

It's the same story for the last few months, once the opposition scores we have no reply, no answer. We folded like a pack of cards. Thank the lord we are not going up. We weren't embarrassed by anyone last time, but I think we would have been destroyed next season. At least Boothroyd admitted that we have to change our style of play - that's a positive for me. With regards to the players that people feel have to go, I ask who is gonna want to stay? I think there is a lot of bad feeling in the changing room, and the damage may be permanent.

on a positive note,we did play some football eventually, but like boothroyd said we need to get rid of the deadwood within the club.i think demerit, shittu, ellin
gton(derby bound),hoskins,franc
is,priskin, kabba will go.even tommy smith may go.we will have to rebuild with reduced funds.as long as we try to play a bit of footy ill be happy.it will be a tough season but we should stick with ab at least till xmas and evaluate then.i was one of the negative posters recently calling for boothers head,we should give him half a season to convince us and then decide.at least he had the bo@@ocks to admit that on sky tv.

Zip - how about answering a question or two without any fanfare or general BS. Did you notice a change in style over the past 2 games and did you think that was an improvement? I wonder if you even watched the games.

BOOTHROYD SHOUD BE LYNCHED FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS...and then kicked senseless and dragged through the street....and then its Simpsons and Ashtons turn.

Anyway you are all a bunch of deluded, self important, docile, obedient, wanky happy clappers who all really need a good kicking...i cant believe you are supporting this total fraud of a manager. He is not a good manager by any stretch of the imgaination, he is a pathetic imbecile who doesn't know what he's doing....neither do those useless back room staff starting with that useless prat Mackay. Sack em all i say.

PS By the way, if the best way you can express yourself is to call someone "a furkcing cunnt" then maybe I shouldn't even respond to your negative, empty, joyless statements. You've slagged the team off all season and seem to have been far king miserable throughout whereas I've just seen us play our hearts out in two legs of a play off semi and am proud of my team. Who's the loser?!

I don't want to buy the new shirts as it has a end of season dvd worth 14.99 included what highlights can they include in this dvd!!!
4 new home/away kis in 4 seasons is extracting urine out of the supporters!!!!!

Zip et al. Let me baffle you with facts.
BOOTHROYD'S ERA:
Season 1: Avoided relegation.
Season 2: Promotion to the premiership.
Season 3: FA Cup semi-finalists and respected (by Wenger, Ferguson, Mourinho) battling Premiership team.
Season 4: Play offs again (OK, crap towards the end with a final flourish of passing football).

WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!!!!!!!

"colni zip was rite though"

slasherr, you're most entertaining but didn't "colni" as you call him predict relegation THIS season and a 7th-9th place finish only a couple weeks ago?
