RICHMOND: ‘Cowardly attacker’ jailed
A dad-of-three with a long criminal record was jailed after attacking an undergraduate in a kebab shop row.
Glenroy Pilgrim, 29, of Twickenham Road, Twickenham, who has a criminal record going back to his teens, appeared for sentence at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday having admitted a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to Chris Mendez in the early hours of April 13, 2007.
Jailing him for 21 months, Judge Patrick Talbot said: "You had three or four vodkas and at 2.30am you went to the Euro Café in Ealing.
"You barged your way to the counter and made your presence felt by banging a coin on the counter.
"This led Mr Mendez and his friends to laugh and joke, partly about the size of your fists."
The court was told that outside the cafe, Pilgrim punched Mr Mendez twice in the head, and he fell to the ground. He then kicked Mendez twice in the head.
Judge Talbot said: "You were wearing boots and he was seriously injured by your cowardly act."
Mr Mendez suffered a broken nose, four broken teeth and cuts and bruises.
He needed hospital treatment and considerable dental treatment.
Despite having another serious assault on his record, Judge Talbot decided Pilgrim was not a danger to the public.
The court was told Pilgrim had been drinking after hearing that his dad was dying.
