Stab victim was car thief
Dad-to-be Mikey Brown was serving a suspended sentence for stealing cars and driving dangerously at the time he was fatally stabbed in the Works nightclub in June.
At the time of his death, Mikey, 23, was serving a 12-month suspended sentence for aggravated vehicle taking, driving dangerously and driving while disqualified after being convicted in September last year.
The case appeared at Kingston Crown Court last week for the order to be revoked but bizarrely had to be adjourned for two weeks because the probation service could not prove that Mikey was dead.
During the short hearing on Friday, Her Honour Judge Barnes tersely asked the probation officer in court why no death certificate had been filed, despite it being four months since Mikey's death was front page news.
Judge Barnes added that all that was required was a short visit to the records section at Kingston Register Office.
The probation officer told the judge that she would look into it and the case was adjourned until November 9.
Mikey, whose family live in Aldrich Crescent, New Addington, was killed in The Works nightclub on June 23. Police were called to the nightclub at 2am and Mikey was taken by ambulance to Kingston hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. Mikey, who was due to become a father, clashed with another man in the Boiler Bar area of the club.
His girlfriend Marcie gave birth to a baby boy Romarni within weeks of his death.
It is understood Mikey chose the name for his son before he was killed.
Shaun Greenidge, 19, of Hilary Avenue, Mitcham, was arrested in September and charged with Mikey's murder.
During a short hearing at the Old Bailey, he pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.
His two week trial is expected to take place on either April 21 or April 28 next year.

Why do you need a death certificate if you know the man is dead? Unless you believe the newspaper is a fabrication what a waste of public tax payer’s money – idiot judge what is the world coming to these days.
As for the car offences don’t really see the relevance of that to his murder with a knife – unrelated matter – rather nasty to demonise the father in this way and his young son

My sympathy for the man who died has now gone.
One less criminal on our streets.

One less criminal off the streets, sorted. Its very rare that people get killed for no reason. I understand it is distressing and unforgivable when it does but the fact is a mojority of murders in Croydon seem to be gang related and involve low life scum.

People make me sick - this boy is dead. Have some respect for the family and his child.
I don't think a stolen car is equal to a mans life do you?
So if you ever ran through a red light, then the next week you were murdered, we could all say 'oh thank god for that the streets are a safer place!?'
Exactly - i don't think so!
RIP Mikey

The [bold]irony[/bold] of this, if had been given a [bold]custodial sentence[/bold] like he should of been and not a [bold]suspended sentence[/bold] for stealing cars and driving dangerously he would still be alive.
What an hilarious twist of fate and for once our country’s failure to sentence criminals correctly has given us a decent result

I agree with Franks comments. It is rare people get attacked/killed for no reason, these bar shootings and stabbings that seem to happen every night are obviously ongoing fueds or gang related.
Its about time all these young lads grew up and started actually contributing something to society.
Although saying that, perhaps these thugs gradually killing each other off is their method of contribution.

Aggravated vehecle taking and dangerous driving taking were committed at the same time. However, he was driving on a ban, so what were the other offences that led him being banned before this crime. These are only the offences we know about - he may have even more form. It's totally relevant to the murder because it shows that he was a persistant offender and therefore is more likely to get into trouble in other areas of his life That's not to say the killer is any better, just that the more you roll in mud, the dirtier you get. as for the comment about running a red light by mj, He didn't just run a red light, He was done for dangerous driving when on a ban,and if you think that's not too bad, then Cast your mand back a few weeksand spare a thought for the family of the elderly couple from Croydon who were hit head on by stolen car on the M4. Stolen cars DO OFTEN equal a mans life ,but all too often, it's the wrong mans life

No doubt the family will @ some point blame the government. stating had it not been for their early release scheme he would still be inside and alive to see his son. i am sorry that a child will grown up not knowing his son but Frankly as far as i see it, its one less criminal on the streets. i am sure some of you would be singing a different tune had if it was the other way around!?!?

If you look at the charges its not the case of just car theft.. its agravated..
Also his child was due in a few weeks and he was in a nightclub at 2am getting involved in a fight. Along with this he was on bail for a violent crime. What more do you need to know what kind of man he was.

Oh Right Alaina, so when u are having a child, your social life must end? So are u saying you are not allowed to go out and socialise at all? As for getting into fights, Im sure he didnt specifically go there to get into a fight and be killed!
The convictions against him are so irrelevant. He wasnt a murderer or a rapist! So he stole a car or a few, and drove dangerously, sorry but so what? Noone here knows the full picture of what he did and what those convictions involved so who are u all to judge him? I find it unbeleivable that people have no compassion! He was a young man and certainly didnt deserve to die because of what he did in the past! Have u never heard of giving people a second chance and people growing up and realising their mistakes? Everyone condemning him, I would bet my right arm that not all of you have made some mistake in their life and regretted it!
Have some respect for his family who have to read this! I dont even know the man and I am angered!
And to Frank, u old g#t, he isnt making a gun gesture, its actually a dance move and hes posing for the camera! haha its laughable the cr#p people come out with!

No I dont think when having a child your life should be put on hold but if I was a convcited criminal and I had a child due in a few weeks yes I would keep away from nightclubs and be at home with my partner.
To be honest I dont care what his family think if they read these comments much like he didnt care about his victims when he committed his crimes.
Its sad but the law abiding citizens of Croydon/London/Engla
nd etc are so fed up with gangsters, criminals etc that we do feel the way a number have commented above. Why should I care about a criminal or his family

He had a chance to change when he first got banned and chose to waste it be stealing a car and driving dangerously. As for Lisa's comment "not murdering or raping somebody , he stole a car or a few. sorry but so what". Lets hope when you or your child is crossing the road and a stolen car mows you down on a zebra crossing doing 60mph leaving you crippled or dead that you dont suddenly have a change of heart about how "irrelevent" it is. As for your social life ending when you have children, YES most of it does.Having your first child is expensive, and yet with weeks to go ,he's out clubbing.Must have made a lot of money stealing cars because when my child came along I was was working night and day to make sure we had everything in place, and its been like that ever since, as most straight hardworking people will tell you.

It's sad when anyone dies, no matter who they are. He was a convicted criminal who may have gone on to do even worse things or he may have grown up and become a decent member of society, we'll never know.
Glorying in another human beings death is never a good thing.

Well he never crippled or killed anyone so that is irrelevant. Noone actually has details of the crimes he committed!
I just think its disrespectful because regardless of what he did, he has a family who had feelings and he certainly didnt deserve to die when there are worse crimes committed out there, much worse!
There is more to a story than what u read in the news, so u are all very naive.
I remember he had tons of comments when he passed, and all were ones about how good a character he was.
People sit there on their high horse thinking they are such good law abiding citizens, its pathetic! Some people in this country are the lowest of the low and this is my opinion from comments I read from this website to others.Sitting there making comments as if butter wouldnt melt!
Ive not been a law abiding citizen all my life. Ive shoplifted when I was young, smoke weed, stole in the past but I bet Im a much nicer person than most of u commenting! Just because I did those things and may smoke now, does it mean I should die by the same fate? Hardly! As I said, people make mistakes and people deserve a second chance but u all talk as if u are all perfect.
There are worse things going on in the world. And u will burn in hell for ur comments if that is how u think about people, that they deserve to die over such things!
And I hardly think going out a few weeks before his girlfriend gives birth, makes him a bad person. Its pathetic to even try and use that in an argument!

I knew it wouldnt take someone long to start mentioning racism - I wouldnt care if this person was black, green, brown or white - I am fed up with people breaking the law and getting away with it whilst us law abiding people work very hard to see the goods we pay for out of our money taken by criminals - I have been mugged twice and not only lost things which can never be replaced it has made me very nervous about being on my own in Croydon at nightime - why should my life be affected by scum.
This was not someone walking up and taking a car - it was aggravated - lets think more about the person who the car was taken from and not the scum who did it.
Ok I have seen these comments on here about various cases and yes they have tended to be about black men - why is that is it because of racism - no its not its because a large number of recent cases has involved black young men. Rather than talk of racism the black community should be working together to ensure that teenagers are stopped from entering a life of gangs and crime. I keep hearing about a lack of decent male roles i.e fathers.
As for those who think it is acceptable for a father to be in a club till early hours only a few weeks before the birth of his first child surely they cant belive this is acceptable is that really a role model.

Lisa so you have shop lifted and stolen - ok so we do make mistakes and maybe yes you deserve to be forgiven.
But you smoke so I imagine you mean grass/cannabis: You are one of the reasons why there are so many guns and knives on the street as gangs fight over their territory - black gangs who are willing to fight and kill each other because of the money they make from selling drugs.

He got caught stealing cars, so what, ok its not right but thats what he done, you cant change the past but you can make your future what you want and his Son was his future!!!

Well, the word racism has not come out of my mouth and in fact I wasnt the one who mentioned colour first.
I am baffled as to why it is a problem for him to go out for the night a few weeks before she gives birth? How does that make him a bad role model? What would he need to be doing then? Should all men be condemned to the house waiting for their partner's waters to break? As I said before, that argument is ridiculous! You make it sound as if going to a nightclub is such a terrible thing!

Callous? Hardly! More like, I dont know the full picture so will not jump to conclusions and say the man deserved to die.
As for dangerous driving, depends on the reason really. I know someone who was done for the same thing reason being, they were changing a cd in the car. Dangerous if you arent properly looking at the road yes, worthy of death? NO!
As for the other conviction, as I said we all make mistakes. Nice to hear you arent a criminal! Ive done minor illegal things myself. It doesnt make me a bad person and certainly doesnt warrant me to be stabbed to death!

Reading this story, and regarding the easy-to-see future of this wretched character's child (children?), it's perhaps about time we considered automatic castration for low-lifes before they start breeding and thereby causing society even more misery - not to mention costing taxpayers money - far into the future. The incidental benefit would also be a calming effect, so I believe.

I have just read through the comments on this page and cannot see how any of you are in a position to judge this young person or the events surrounding his life/death. In my opinion for you all to be able to make such judgements surrounding him and involve his grilfriend and baby i feel that you are are all contributors to the problems in society today. The criminal activites that he was involved were not ok and certainly not acceptable but that does not mean that he deserved to die. As for judging him for being out in a club before his baby died well whos to know that he wasn't craaming a night out before the toll of fatherhood decended upon him? No one will ever know the extent of what he did and did not do but talking about him in this way will not right the wrongs in society, he was one of many and untill people start looking into ways to help young people then things will never change. So considering all the time you have to disrespect the dead why dont you debate on that. "if your not part of the solution then your part of the problem"

Sorry for the error
'As for judging him for being out in a club before his baby died well whos to know that he wasn't craaming a night out before the toll of fatherhood decended upon him?' Meant before his baby was born all the talk of death obviously too much.
Apologies.

Perhaps part of the problem is that some people (i.e Alaina, Croydon) thinks that beeing at a nightclub at 2am is the problem...

Let's sum up with the facts - He [bold]was[/bold] a criminal. He is [bold]no longer[/bold] on this planet. I have [bold]never[/bold] been involved in crime in the 76 years that I have been alive. I [bold]do not[/bold] expect to be walking down the street with my shopping and be picked at random as the victim of a murder. I think it’s fairly safe to say that those that mix in the life of crime should expect everything that comes their way!!!

I honestly dont think this information shoudl have been released, all is has done has started this debate when some poor guy is dead! Of course I feel for people who have eben victims of crime like car theft etc, its never nice, but I feel a hell of a lot more sorry for Mikey! He was being given a chance to turn things around by being given a suspended sentence. He didnt get a chance to prove whether it was working!(the suspended sentence that is)Thanks MJ for backing me up

Why are so many people defending this useless, benefit scrounging oxygen thief? Have they not heard the expression 'you live by the sword, you die by the sword'? Scum like him should be sterilised at birth to prevent them from procreating.

This should never have been released - it is not public interest?
They were obviously desperate for a story.
They must have known it would have this affect, and now they have just put his family through more unnecessary torment!
STAB VICTIM IS CAR THEIF - are they trying to say don't cry for him he was scum?
Disgusting - this writer should be ashamed she has sunk so low!

Condolences to his family and the child whom will grow up without a father.
I am just hoping that this will deter a few if not many young men [italic]and[/italic] women away from knives, guns and violence because the end result is always the same - death. Let there be some good from this.
To bring up criminal convictions now is no more than spitting on his grave and I feel is totally irrevelent in regards to his demise.
The other tragedy from this story is the realisation that society is breaking down and we are getting a generation of people with no respect for themselves or others or the rules in which keep everything in order and controlled - civil liberties are being eroded.
Comments like -
'He wasnt a murderer or a rapist! So he stole a car or a few, and drove dangerously, sorry but so what?' is giving an impression that some crimes are not bad as another - a crime is a crime and the common denomiator is that there is always a victim.
Peace.
p.s You is the correct spelling [italic]not[/italic] U!!

Enough said people, a young man is dead whatever he did or didnt do does not matter he is dead, his partner is suffering and his child is fatherless because of mindless violence, slagging him off will change nothing, and the people that have posted comments on here should come down from the moral high ground, no one is perfect not you or me.

Lisa - you talk so much of people mentioning colour and how every one is so racist and they all have prejudice views against black people. It seems in this quote you are the racist and you are the main person talking about colour in these quotes?
You are the one who always brings it back to race!
I understand you wanted to stand up for Mikey, so do i and i have done in previous comments as i agree some comments made on here were sickening, made by people who are bored in their own lives so judge others. But you making statemnets like this does not help your cause as it seems you cannot see past black and white?

Lisa you have got a real chip on your shoulder! Its fair enough you dont want people slating other races but dont start being rude about white people because thats not acceptable either.
To be honest in my experience i see alot more black and asian people being racist to white people than i do the other way round. I have been spat at, shouted at and threatened because of my colour. And i think its disgusting. but the police wont do nefing about it because i am white and they dont care.

I am not being racist its the truth!
So its ok for people to say its only blacks who do steaming, its only black that do this and do that but I make one comment about the majority of people who take a certain drug which causes the most gun crime amongst drug dealers and I am suddenly a racist!
And Sarah from Wimbledon, shut up! Funny how you dont label people who make blatant comments on here about people of colour or make comments about a dead man. But I try and speak what I think about what people say and the lack of comments made on certain articles and none on others and u want to label me a racist? Ha thats a joke and a half u hypocrite! I think you need to go and read other comments made on this site 1st rather than try and have a dig at me, or have I struck a chord with you or something?
Anyway, back to the story. I am glad to see there are more respectful posts about Mikey on here

And one more thing. I too agree there is a problem with youths in general. Me being in my late 20's, I and my friends all say the youth of today are disrespectful, rude, violent etc. And yes there are groups of black youths out there causing crimes etc. But it is not every black person and I am just sick of reading comments on these websites where people are generalising. If you live in my world and my boyfriend's world and my friend's world, then you would soon understand where I am coming from because we have to deal with prejudices on a regular basis but we choose to ignore it and better ourselves whereas unfortunately others dont. But I take exception to people making comments about blacks etc when I know my boyfriend works bloody hard in life and doesnt need to be labelled a thug and looked at like a thug just because he is black, and based on comments made on this website, this is the impression I get. No I am not racist, and I dont appreciate people like Sarah saying I am just because she doesnt like my views.
Like this article, I wasnt even the 1st to mention colour, it wouldnt have even got mentioned had it not been brought up. Thankfully most derogatory comments have been deleted because this is about a young man who is now dead who happened to have a bad past and nothing else!

For crying out loud - Lisa SHUT UP.
Stop posturing & get that big fat chip off your shoulder. We all have difficult lives for whatever reason - but dont whine about it on here. This is a forum for debates on news stories, not a "political correctness competition". I dont care if you are pink with yellow spots & your boyfriend is an iguanna from the moon & I dont think many other people care either. What has happened here is a tragedy - a Man has lost his life -However, the saddest fact is, he was a criminal & had he been given a custodial sentence - he probably would still be alive today! A true indication of why tougher sentencing is needed. You know who I feel for? His child & girlfriend Marcie, they have lost a very important thing a soulmate & a father. Thats a crying shame. LISA, for you to write on here about having sex with your "black" boyfriend, just to score points is so direspectful. You should be VERY VERY ashamed!

Did I miss the death penalty being reintroduced into this country? I am surprised that it is being dished out for stealing cars etc though, wow!! Just think of all those people out there with asbo's coming out of their ears, and people with multiple points on their licences for speeding, or talking or their mobile phones whilst driving...mmm...I bet a few of the people that have posted on here have done that...and we all know how dangerous that can be. So watch out! We can not pick and choose like this. Most of us have broken the law in some way at some time, perhaps not intentionally, or maybe with 'good reason', do we deserve to die? No. This lad had been given his sentence by the courts, they are the only people that can decide what should happen to someone. We have no right to do so! Do you think his little boy will agree with you? Or his mother? would your mother?

When I used to live in the UK - Thankfully not anymore, I knew the person in this article. Yes he did make mistakes in his young life and for those mistakes he was charged and convicted. No matter who we are and from whatever walk of life, no one is perfect. To release a story like this is very insensitve to his family and friends who have done nothing to deserve this loss of life. I beleive some compassion is in order and to all the readers who feel it is necessary to write cold hearted comments, you should consider how many mistakes you have made in your own lives and imagine if someone also wished some draconian penalty on you.
I would like to offer my condolences to the family at this difficult time and I hope that the readers think more carefully about what they post and the editors also consider what is truly newsworthy.

I have read all of the comments left here, I knew Mikey for over 20 years he was my neighbour for ten of those years i went to primary school with him and carried on to see him as we grew up and all i have to say to these people that are disrespecting him the way they are is that you never knew Mikey you never knew anything about his life and what he had been through ok so he had been involved in car crime which was wrong and he had pleaded guilty as to why he was aserving a suspended sentance because he knew he had done wrong but since finding out that he was going to be a father he had changed his life around he was working hard to buy and save for his unborn son. Then on a night out he was killed only him and the guy who stabbed him know exactly what happened that night so who are you all to judge him he may not have been perfect but he was working to improve his life!!!!!!!! more than alot of people in this country let him rest in peace !!!! **** Mikey you was a good man despite ur mistakes rest in peace hun ****

By strange circumstance I knew the lad charged with this, I didnt know Micky. From the more restrained comments they sound very much alike, young lads who had made mistakes but were learning to grow up and become adults. They were both enjoying a night out, who doesnt. What I find really sad is that we have all made mistakes, we have all learnt to grow up.
The difference is that the argument they had in my day would have been settled with a black eye or bloody nose. How does this society chanhge the fact that today's youth are willing to carry knives and use for simple every day arguments. Two lifes runied, two families devestated, lets concentrate on how you stop this for the future, not trying to create our view of something we will never know the full deatils of.
