The number of commuters travelling for more than an hour has risen by 22 per cent in the past decade, says the Trades Union Congress.
Britons endure the second longest commute in Europe at 54 minutes a day.
In the capital, more than 1.3million people take more than an hour to get to work.
The study coincides with a Work Wise campaign calling for firms to allow more flexible hours and home work to reduce the stress of the daily commute.
