THE case of a Securicor guard whose burnt out car was found in Nazeing five days after he drove off with £1m in used notes remains open ten years after the crime was committed.o

It was on Friday, January 22, 1993, that Eddie Maher and a colleague made a delivery to Lloyds Bank in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

Maher, who was 37 at the time, remained in the vehicle while his colleague went inside. But when the colleague returned, he found Maher, and the Securicor van, had gone.

The van was later found abandoned nearby. When police went to Maher's home in South Woodham Ferrers, Chelmsford, they found it deserted.

Five days after Maher disappeared with the cash, his reddish brown coloured Opel Ascona car was found burnt out in Meadgate Lane, Nazeing.

It has been reported that during the police investigation, officers have received numerous unconfirmed sightings of Maher and his family in more than 17 countries.

But a decade on and police are still no nearer tracking down Maher who, for the time being at least, appears to have got away with the 'perfect crime' and remains on the run with his common-law wife Deborah Brett, then 27, and son, Lee, who was three at the time.

A Suffolk Police spokesman told the Guardian this week: "The case remains open and any new information that comes in will be investigated. Anyone who has any information should please ring Suffolk Police on 01473 613500."
