Previous Occupation - Management Consultant to Omega Partners, Director of Omega Partners Postal (visiting many countries), Economic Advisor to Liberal Democrat MPs (1989-93) (mainly for Paddy Ashdown MP & Alan Beith MP) - was involved with policy developments such as supporting an Independent Central Bank and putting a penny on Income Tax.
Personal Overview - A narrow winner at the General Election of 1997 who vastly improved his position at subsequent outings. He has quickly become a Liberal Democrat Spokesman, with experience as an economic advisor and management consultant, having made several speeches on tax and finance issues. In recent years he has been set fair for continued promotion within Liberal Democrat ranks. Within the party he has also been Chairman of it's Campaigns and Communications Committee which is responsible for preparing the party for the next general election. Was ordered in February 2008 to leave the Commons Chamber after he protested to the Deputy Speaker over the decision not to grant a debate on the Liberal Democrat proposal for a referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union. Entered the Government in May 2010, at the Department of Business rather than the Foreign Office that he had previously been shadowing. Was promoted into the Cabinet in February 2012 following the resignation of Chris Huhne. He then entered the public limelight in the spring of 2012 when the Government confirmed that it would be his department that had responsibility for fuel issues. This followed the strongly criticised remarks made about storing fuel in Jerry cans by Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude in the context of a possible fuel tanker drivers' strike.
Political History - Chairman of the Liberal Democrat Manifesto Costings Group, member of the Federal Policy Committee, former leader of the Liberal Democrat London Group. Councillor, Cefn Cribwr Community Council (1985-91) & Chairman (1986-87). MP Kingston and Surbiton (1997-). Member of the Procedure Select Committee (1997-2000). Member of the Joint Committee on Tax Simplification Bills (2001-). Liberal Democrat Whip & Treasury Spokesman (Junior) (1997-99), Economy (Treasury Affairs) Spokesman (1999-2002). Member of the Treasury Select Committee (1999-2001). Shadow Spokesperson for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (responsible for Local Government & the Regions) (2002-05). Shadow Education & Skills Secretary (2005-06). Shadow Trade & Industry Secretary (2006-07). Chief of Staff (2006-07), Chair of Campaigns and Communications (2007-). Shadow Foreign Secretary (2007-10). Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (2010-). Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (2012-).
Characteristics - Appears economically inclined. The local distaste for Conservative politics in June 2001 in his constituency led to tactical voting which swelled his majority to stratospheric proportions, although his majority did fall back in 2005. Despite the majority he will need to display continuing care in tending to constituency matters if he is not to eventually face defeat at Tory hands. Is notable for being awarded by the Royal Humane Society for saving a woman who had fallen onto the train tracks at a London train station in 1994. Supports Notts County FC and Kingstonian FC.
